Summary

David Olusoga's Black and British is a rich and revealing exploration of the extraordinarily long relationship between the British Isles and the people of Africa. Drawing on new genetic and genealogical research, original records, expert testimony and contemporary interviews, Black and British reaches back to Roman Britain, the medieval imagination and Shakespeare's Othello.

Unflinching, confronting taboos and revealing hitherto unknown scandals, Olusoga describes how black and white Britons have been intimately entwined for centuries.

my history

thank you david for educating me on the pain, struggle, lineage, strength, resilience and hope of my people that has lead to the solo, economically and cultural progression of what we call the west, europe and america. the success of a nation came at the cost of the abilateration of millions of dark souls those names will forever be forgotten from history. thank you David in helping me see who I am by first showing me who I was. this book is key but fundamental to anyone who wants to know their place in the west. who's history is filled with faces, cultures and people different to what you see in the mirror.

A very comprehensive and well researched book.

I have learnt a lot! Sadly, I believe that this will not be widely read by a diverse range of people (including Black British) who could be educated about this history. As a proud Londoner, I mix with different groups of people. Black history is most often Eurocentric and known from the lens of slavery. This book is not about Black power, suffering and slavery, instead, it offers the reader a differing view of the black person in British history and also the present day. I will undoubtedly listen to this book again and share with others.

Essential - the story of Britons white and black

Had a wonderful, if sometimes deeply uncomfortable, time listening to this. The narrator is excellent, bringing just the right amount of shocked outrage to the things he was reading. I'm really glad I listened to the book rather than reading it - there are lots of dates and names which I let wash over me, letting my imagination hear the stories. I feel like I understand my country, Britain, better now as a white person. Brexit makes total sence! an important listen, but also one I enjoyed and may well re-listen to. Thanks

History I knew but didn't know really.

Fantastically written history of this country. Things I knew but actually didn't know. Shocking and I feel I need to apologise for all the damage white people have done. The blatant racism from all walks of life. I feel sick to my stomach at the attitudes to people of colour.

Amazing History

Okay, so this was perhaps the most comprehensive tome of Black British historty for a contemporary reader/listener. IT highlights EVERYTHING, and goes in depth on so many topics that it needs re-listening. However its comprehensiveness does make it difficult to listen to or long periods of time. Still an amazing Audiobook, but it takes a lot out of you.

Thought-inspiring

Deep and heavy stuff, showing how messy and complex and hidden British history really is. Made me angry and disappointed at times, so took a while to get through since I had to take breaks, but it was history book I definitely enjoyed listening to.

What a Book! Best book I've listened to in years.

I have been searching for a book on British black history and this is the one. Reading and listening to podcasts on black history had been very American centric, until I found this book. It is fantastic, I've recommended it to everyone I know. Very well read and researched. Read it!

Important

Loved it. The construction of the British, the construction of Britain/UK has this incredible at times bright and other times troubling relationship with African people.

Untold history

This is a great read for any race. the timeline is great and interlinked the historic events and people. Sometimes it jumps but then pulls you right back to that period.
it makes you want to ask your grand or even great grandparents questions.
