About this listen

Everson Croft here, professor of mythology and nervous as sin. Tonight's the night I tell Caroline the truth: about my feelings, my magic, everything.

So why am I surprised when Detective Vega calls me to a new case? An elusive creature is chewing up residents in a housing project run by rival gangs. One more mangled body and the place will explode into warfare.

Problem is, someone's protecting the killer. All signs point to the vampire Arnaud - who's just upped the stakes. If I don't send Detective Vega down a trail of bad leads, he'll snatch her child. But is Arnaud trying to derail the investigation or twist it to his own ends, ones that could reshape the city?

Worse, Caroline has disappeared, and I'm under suspicion. No one believes I last saw her with Angelus, a mysterious hunk and full-blooded faerie. Dangerous no matter how you slice it.

Two cases: one personal, one professional, and both going to hell in a hurry.

Time to wizard up.

pretty good

it is a decent story. can be annoying how often he gets beat up. I was hoping there would be some hint that there was some huge untapped reserve of power that the Prof has yet to discover. sounds like an mediocre wizard at the moment who solves cases by accident. it's only book 2 so I'll keep going as I think (hope) the character must be developed more soon 😊

Fantastic

Another compelling story, masterfully narrated so you do not wish to stop. Prof Croft is back for more creature hunting, this time with detective Vega and we can only hope they will get to the end of their adventure in one piece...

Excellent

I received a free code and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I’ve had this series in my wish list for ages and always hummed and ahhed about buying them so when I saw the free code I was pleased. My hesitation to buy them was unfounded as I really enjoyed listening and have just bought the remaining books in thee series .

a very hard listen

if you want a quick flowing story about a powerful wizard who can handle himself in a fight then this is not for you. this is about a man who is very annoying at his of ability to not stay on his feet or even think properly. if he went up against a 10 year old he would be out muscled and out thought. cant understand why the main character has been made so pathetic. when you start asking why he did do that or oh you have been beaten up again multiple times then this is not for you. a side story was introduced which showed the main story was simply not strong enough to keep the story going by itself. To give an example of how slow this was I was listing at 1.25 speed speed and it was still slow. I couldn't finish the last 3 hours and I doubt much happens.

Enjoyable but average fare.

Prof Croft is enjoyable as a series, but it seems to lack meat on the bones. His magic system is unexplained beyond his prism and Thelonius seems to be one step away yet 5 mins later he is casting again.

The biggest problem really is that James Cronin needs to get into the role more. He doesn’t reflect the tense situations well enough. He needs to invest more energy into the role. James Marsters had the same problem as the Dresden narrator in the early audiobooks.

When Croft is in the story shouting those spells like his life depends on it, the narrator needs to reflect that. Cronin can’t do that and it disappoints. I hope he grows in confidence.

I will probably try the next book and if it doesn’t improve it will be my last. The urban fantasy field is a tough one.
