Summary

Developing video games - hero's journey or fool's errand? The creative and technical logistics that go into building today's hottest games can be more harrowing and complex than the games themselves, often seeming like an endless maze or a bottomless abyss. In Blood, Sweat, and Pixels, Jason Schreier takes listeners on a fascinating odyssey behind the scenes of video game development, where the creator may be a team of 600 overworked underdogs or a solitary geek genius. Exploring the artistic challenges, technical impossibilities, marketplace demands, and Donkey Kong-size monkey wrenches thrown into the works by corporate, Blood, Sweat, and Pixels reveals how bringing any game to completion is more than Sisyphean - it's nothing short of miraculous.

Taking some of the most popular, best-selling recent games, Schreier immerses listeners in the hellfire of the development process, whether it's RPG studio Bioware's challenge to beat an impossible schedule and overcome countless technical nightmares to build Dragon Age: Inquisition; indie developer Eric Barone's single-handed efforts to grow country-life RPG Stardew Valley from one man's vision into a multimillion-dollar franchise; or Bungie spinning out from their corporate overlords at Microsoft to create Destiny, a brand-new universe that they hoped would become as iconic as Star Wars and Lord of the Rings - even as it nearly ripped their studio apart.

Documenting the round-the-clock crunches, buggy-eyed burnout, and last-minute saves, Blood, Sweat, and Pixels is a journey through development hell - and ultimately a tribute to the dedicated diehards and unsung heroes who scale mountains of obstacles in their quests to create the best games imaginable.

GG no Re

Going into indie game development this really appealed and being recounted dramatic stories behind the scenes on games I've played to death and adored this book really opened up the realities developers are faced with. my only negative being the formulaic twists by nature of the industry to each story. Overall great book and I recommend to anyone even interested in gaming.

Very eye-opening!

Great book that gives some insight into the incredible challenges game developers have to overcome in order to produce the blockbuster titles we all love.

In some instances it is truly shocking how the industry works at the present time and highlights a dire need to establish some common practices to protect the talents involved in these great teams.

Definitely worth listening to, especially if you're interested in working in the industry or just in hope games get to launch at all.

One minor iggle/mistake:
The narrator called the UNSC from Halo the USSC.

An excellent insight into the game industry

I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking of making a game either solo or with friends. It shines a light on the common issues that both large and small teams hit, from conflicts of ideas to funding and control over your IP. The narration is great and keeps you engaged throughout. I highly recommend this book.

I would have liked the Cyberpunk story

Cyberpunk has had me completely enthralled for a couple of years. So much anticipation, then so many bad reviews. So many that the developers even said buyers could return the game. This led me to become more interested in what goes into the development process of video games. This book is an easy read (listen). The chapters are short, full of intrigue and read with enthusiasm.

A great filler for those who want a short in between books listen.
