LESSONS FROM A BOSS-LEVEL DISRUPTOR AND GAMING LEGEND

Reggie Fils-Aimé, retired President and Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America Inc., shares leadership lessons and inspiring stories from his unlikely rise to the top.

Although he’s best known as Nintendo's iconic President of the Americas—immortalized for opening Nintendo’s 2004 E3 presentation with, “My name is Reggie, I'm about kicking ass, I'm about taking names, and we're about making games”—Reggie Fils-Aimé’s story is the ultimate game plan for anyone looking to beat the odds and achieve success.

Learn from Reggie how to leverage disruptive thinking to pinpoint the life choices that will make you truly happy, conquer negative perceptions from those who underestimate or outright dismiss you, and master the grit, perseverance, and resilience it takes to dominate in the business world and to reach your professional dreams.

As close to sitting one-on-one with the gaming legend as it gets, you will learn:

  • About the challenges Reggie faced throughout his life and career—from his humble childhood as the son of Haitian immigrants, to becoming one of the most powerful names in the history of the gaming industry.
  • What it takes to reach the top of your own industry, including being brave enough to stand up for your ideas, while also being open to alternative paths to success.
  • How to create vibrant and believable visions for your career, your team, and your company.
  • How to maintain relentless curiosity and know when to ask questions to shatter the status quo.

Has its moments, but overall a bit self-indulgent

Narration by Reggie is spot-on - who else would you want reading this but the man himself? Some terrific insight into his career, lessons learned and specifically some of the goings-on behind the scenes from his time at Nintendo. However, outside of that it seemed almost narcissistic on how Reggie would talk about himself and his successes. Sometimes I struggled to see the lesson learned and only the 'how great am I' narrative. A little disappointing in that regard, but I don't regret listening to this book by any measure.

A must for all gamers, and leaders, and all else

I will just put buzzwords next to each other. An extraordinary adventure from somebody, who managed to overcome obstacles and use his disruptive mind to give much joy to many, who enjoyed products from the companies he worked for.
If your are a games and want to look a little behind the curtains, well, this is for you.

Very entertaining, and thoughtful

There were some great lessons to be learned in this book and it was presented in a fascinating manner. I also appreciated that Reggie himself performed the reading for this audiobook, it enhanced the overall experience and was quite immersive because of that. It also gave me inspiration to do and learn some things in life that I didn't consider before. Highly recommended!

disappointing

I was very much looking forward to this, but just did not find many of the stories engaging and felt some of the management and leadership lessons wildly outdated and painful to listen to.

An inspiring read or listen in this case

Reggie is a wordsmith who paints the tail of a life most can only dream of with hard work, persistence, drive and determination he carved a rather interesting career that lead to several of nintendos biggest wins, his tale is also a tail of trust, friendship and ability to know when the time is right to bow out and leave a place better than he found it. As an avid biography reader this is such an enjoyable story full of heat and trust.

Egotistical

Reggie is a lovely man and a great businessman, but his storytelling is a bit on the nose with his successes - the book felt rushed which I think contributed to this. Also the "The so what" summaries were gimmicky and irritating, made it feel like a cheap business how-to book.

I love myself

This book is not for me, and this is my first negative review out of hundreds of books. Cringe-worthy the amount of times he can say 'I'. I, I, I ,The boss...This may be a cultural/personal issue, but I prefer to read about slightly more humble individuals. I commend his journey though, kudos for that.

excellence in Disrupting the Game

I've never listened or read a book like before a business memoir, and I must say it's fantastic Reggie gives fantastic narration and the bonus interview after the book is finished with Geoff Keighley, chef's kiss. I highly recommend this book to anyone who even the slightest interest in the game's industry.

more than just a corperate message

great lessons in this book, the delivery is clear and concise, and the structure is sensible. I was worried it would be a bit biased due to it being a recolection of a business executive, but it goes into the more gritty and unstable moments of Reggie's life and converts them into inspirational and sensible teaching moments, rather than just a fluffy resume.

Reggie: A mentor and a gamer

Reggie retells key points through his life from childhood in the Bronx, to his days beyond Nintendo. Each chapter has a thoughtful message behind each story, ones that I plan to ho back and reread to help develop myself both professionally and personally.

Amazing book

This book is amazing I love listening how he grow Nintendo, and made it big in north America. This tell you the how he started, where he went, and his plans for the future. The interview at the end of the book was really good how the game award started.

Reggie Fils-Aimé to me is a legend for the Nintendo company. I can't wait to see what he does next. One of my all time memories watching E3 is where he said. " My body is ready." Learn all the stuff the he did in Nintendo, and all the other company he work for is true amazing how he but his experience to the test. Thanks for all the amazing memories from Nintendo.

What a ride!

Reggie's life feels oddly familiar. Normal. But with that hint of success that we all want. He's decisive and disruptive but peaceful and very understanding of others. Thanks for the stories!

Great Business Lessons from a Nintendo Legend

I enjoyed this book a lot. Reggie does a good job of sharing stories and then helping the reader to understand the business lessons behind those stories. If there is any fault I felt that it might be that Reggie showed himself in a good light the entire time. He didn’t talk much about failures (cough cough Wii U… cough). Only really focused on what he did well. I still really enjoyed it and I’m glad he wrote the book. The narration was ok, not superb.
