Story
On March 16, 1992, Elizabeth DeCaro, a 28 year-old mother of four, was found dead in her own home, murdered execution-style with two bullets to the head. Her husband, Rick, was immediately a suspect, having previously struck her "accidentally" with the family van after taking out a $100,000 life insurance policy on her. A Killer Among Us presents the true shocking story of Elizabeth's family and their search for justice against the man who continued to play father to the children whose mother he had killed.

The police in Jersey County, Illinois, accepted Paula Sims' story of a masked kidnapper who snatched her baby girl, Lorelei, from her bassinet. Three years later, her second newborn daughter suffered an identical fate - and this time the police were unable to stop searching until they had discovered the whole horrifying truth. This is the full terrifying story of twisted sexuality and hate seething below the surface of a seemingly normal family and of the massive investigation and nerve-shattering trial that made the unthinkable a reality.

Dorothy Davis and Kerry Whelan were both happy, healthy, affluent, middle-class women from conservative, loving families. Such women are hardly ever among the ranks of the missing. They were not hitchhikers, or associates of drug dealers, or unhappy with their family relationships, or suffering from mental health issues. Dorothy Davis and Kerry Whelan came from different parts of Sydney, mixed in quite different circles, and led completely different lives. They had never met each other, and if they had, they would have had little in common.

On June 25, 1973, a seven-year-old girl went missing from the Montana campground where her family was vacationing. Somebody had slit open the back of their tent and snatched her from under their noses. None of them saw or heard anything. Susie Jaeger had vanished into thin air, plucked by a shadow. As days stretched into weeks, and weeks into months, Special Agent Pete Dunbar attended a workshop at FBI Headquarters in Quantico, Virgina, led by two agents who had hatched a radical new idea: What if criminals left a psychological trail that would lead us to them?

Then he vanished, and the case remained unsolved. In 1994, when cold-case investigator Paul Holes came across the old file, he swore he would unmask GSK and finally give these families closure. Twenty-four years later, Holes fulfilled that promise, identifying 73-year-old Joseph J. DeAngelo. Headlines blasted around the world: one of America's most prolific serial killers had been caught.

Story
Seven Bones is the story of one of the more bizarre murder investigations in Australia’s history. Two wives die in suspicious circumstances: co-incidence or, as husband Thomas Keir describes it, ‘bad luck’? Three years after Thomas Keir alleged his first wife, Jean, deserted him and her young son for another man, his second wife, Rosalina, Jean’s cousin, lay scorched and strangled on her bed. Arriving on the scene, Detective Peter Seymour realised he was either dealing with the world’s unluckiest husband or a serial wife killer.

The tragic story of Susan Powell and her murdered boys, Charlie and Braden, is the only case that rivals the Jon Benet Ramsey saga in the annals of true crime. When the pretty, blonde Utah mother went missing in December of 2009 the media was swept up in the story - with lenses and microphones trained on Susan's husband, Josh. He said he had no idea what happened to his young wife, and that he and the boys had been camping in the middle of a snowstorm.

What a heartbreaking listen

Summary
Two days after Christmas, 2011, Russel Faria returned to his Troy, Missouri, home to find his wife, Betsy, dead, a knife still lodged in her neck. She had been stabbed 55 times in a brutal murder that would set off a chain of events leading to one man's wrongful conviction and imprisonment, another man's death, the revelation of a diabolical scheme, and an astounding miscarriage of justice left unresolved for another 10 years.
First responders concluded that Betsy was dead for hours when Russ discovered her. No blood was found implicating Russ, and surveillance video, receipts, and friends' testimony all supported his alibi. Yet incredibly, police and the prosecuting attorney ignored the evidence. In their minds, Russ was guilty. But prominent defense attorney Joel J. Schwartz quickly recognized the real killer.
The motive was clear. Days before her murder, the terminally ill Betsy replaced her husband with her friend, Pamela Hupp, as her life insurance beneficiary. Still, despite the prosecution's flimsy case and Hupp's transparent lies, Russ was convicted - leaving Hupp free to kill again. Bone Deep takes listeners through the perfect storm of miscalculations and missteps that led to an innocent man's conviction-and recounts Schwartz's successful battle to have that conviction overturned.

Excellent True Crime Read
The first true crime book I ever read was written by Charles Bosworth, Jr. Now I am a fan of the genre. Initially I was impressed by the obvious research, clear writing, and the focus on the jury trial in that case. I was not disappointed with Bone Deep. Again the research and writing are thorough and there is plenty of courtroom action. I hadn’t known about the Betsy Faria murder. I was fascinated by some of the information and infuriated at other times. I highly recommend this book.
Gary Bennet did a great job narrating this audiobook.

Unbelievably Evil
First, if you are not familiar with the facts of this case, and prefer to have the story unfold naturally, do NOT read the publisher's summary of the book. The summary lays out in precise detail all the twists and turns of the case, leaving nothing for the reader to discover on his or her own. There are, after all, people on this planet who do not tune in to the details of America's domestic news on a daily basis.
Author Charles Bosworth unwraps the story of the vicious crime, layer by layer, building tension to an almost unbearable level. The clutter of lies, wilful blindness, and sheer evil obscure the circumstances of Betsy's murder, creating a suspense that is relieved only when the killer is eventually unmasked.
Narration is ok, except for Bennett's tendency to go skidding from one sentence into the next, completely ignoring the period as a stop sign. Meanwhile, the confused listener loses the thread of the narration while trying to sort out the details of both sentences.

Am I living under a rock?
Until this week, I learned about this insane case and Pam Hupp. This story is sad, but most of all, enraging and another reason why "Qualified Immunity" laws need to be revised to suit the 21st century better. There is no reason why the prosecutor should have been immune from liability and even criminal charges after all the evidence of her prosecutorial misconduct.

A great take on a highly publicized story
I was hesitant to spend a credit to purchase this recording because the story is so familiar to me. I have to say, that I’m so glad I did! This book is so well written, with a great pace and interesting details taken from court records and interviews. The actor also does a great job using inflection but doesn’t over-act.
