It is nearing the end of the Year of Our Lord 1145. A monk vows to abandon all earthly ties, but how can Brother Cadfael obey when his son is captured in battle? Olivier de Bretagne is one of many young knights taken prisoner in the current power dispute in Britain, but he is also Cadfael's son, and the monk cannot be objective. A council is planned at Coventry to try to appease the warring factions, and Brother Cadfael asks leave to attend, knowing he must do all in his power to find and deliver his son. A pleasure to hear so much Welshness.
As much as I respect and enjoy Sir Derek Jacobi, Philip Madoc does a far better characterisation, and has leisure to expand the storyline weaving around him. It was lovely to hear so many odd Welsh phrases used, although I do wish they had done as Stephen Thorne did, and used the proper pronunciation of "Cadvel" not "Cad-fie-el". I enjoyed the fact that Olivier de Bretagne sounded half-Syrian, but couldn't get used to Yves Hugonin being pronounced Ives, not Eeves. I shall certainly be getting the rest of these productions.

...and about time too!
I first heard this production of Monk's Hood probably 25 years ago on story tape, and somewhere along the line lost it. I could never feel the thing for the TV series and consequently never considered buying the Derek Jacobi narrations. THIS however, is the real deal - an excellent cast lead by Philip Madoc, superb narrators in the form of Michaels Horden and Kitchen, plus atmospheric music to boot! I am delighted it's been rereleased now, and if you've listened to, or watched other versions, and even half enjoyed them, I confidently predict you will love this selection. A much-loved and long overdue production.

Timeless Stories
Timeless stories of friendship, honour, grace and courage. Good medicine for the soul in these times when when we so need to be reminded of values such as integrity, honesty and honour .
Although I had read the stories before they still kept me engaged. Characters were well played, though it’s hard for anyone to compete with Derek Jacobi. Overall nice period pieces with some excellent narration from Michael Kitchen and Michael Horden.
