Summary

Maria McErlane is best known for appearing in The Fast Show, Killing Eve, Eastenders, Fat Friends, HIGNFY, Holby City, as the voice of Eurotrash and her weekly contributions as agony aunt on the Graham Norton radio show. Her memoir details a warm and witty, sometimes difficult ride through life. For Maria, navigating life in all its glory has been accompanied by a steady stream of bicycles.

No rule book, just a love of the new and a passion for the open road.

Maria details a warm and witty, sometimes difficult ride through childhood, friendships, wealth, fame, reinvention, love and loss.

Each bike, each revolution, has contributed to her own evolution and the lessons she has learned along the way.

Bumps in the Road gives us the same honesty and humour Maria employs for the many listeners seeking advice in her thirteen years as an agony aunt with Graham Norton.

The wheel goes up and the wheel goes down. Happy or sad, life is full of joy, mishaps and annoying obstacles. It’s important to get back in the saddle, keep pedalling up that hill and freewheeling down the other side!

What a beautiful book

Oh how I so enjoyed this lovely persons’ tale of experiences, outlook of life and joyous candor and love of things available to us as human beings, be it happy or sad. I’ve admired Ms McCurlaine for years, I’ve found her very appealing to listen to and she does command your attention, and this book delivers exactly as I would have hoped.
Honest, humble when appropriate, realistic and not hiding behind famous trappings of her friends, and I have found her love affair with bicycles simply heart melting. I adore her and this book, it’s a boost for anyone and so enjoyable, entertaining and just ruddy marvellous. Bravo.

Really enjoyable

I really loved this book, I didn’t know much about Maria apart from radio 2. Maria has lead a fascinating life with some great anecdotes from 80s and 90s. She obviously has a lot of ‘famous people’ encounters but doesn’t brag about this which is really refreshing. It is a very heartwarming read/ listen!. It is well written and brilliantly voiced. Well done Maria!

Ironically, how life is full of bumps in the road..more like potholes these days!

A lovely cycle through a fairly regular life, full of self deprecating anecdotes accompanied by may wise words, when you fall off you just have to get back on and keep peddling. I loved it, and having the lovely Maria's voice reading it has made up for missing her on the radio!

I loved this, could listen to Maria all day. What an amazing life. I love cycling too and it was amazing that Maria wrote about all the bikes in her life. What a lady.

Humerous take on life of the author

Felt the authors vulnerabilities despite the humour so thought it very ‘authentic’ Maria seems kind and generous as a personality despite having seen some stuff. Felt she could have gone ‘deeper’ but held back which of course she is entitled to do. Enjoyed it nevertheless.
