About this listen

On a rugged Colorado mountain ridge, Mattie Cobb and her police-dog partner, Robo, make a grisly discovery - and become the targets of a ruthless killer.

Colorado's Redstone Ridge is a place of extraordinary beauty, but this rugged mountain wilderness harbors a horrifying secret. When a charred body is discovered in a shallow grave on the ridge, officer Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner, Robo, are called in to spearhead the investigation. But this is no ordinary crime - and it soon becomes clear Mattie has a close personal connection to the dead man.

Joined by local veterinarian, Cole Walker, the pair scours the mountaintop for evidence and makes another gruesome discovery: the skeletonized remains of two adults and a child. And then, the unthinkable happens. Could Mattie become the next victim in the murderer's deadly game?

A deranged killer torments Mattie with a litany of dark secrets that call into question her very identity. As a towering blaze races across the ridge, Cole and Robo search desperately for her - but time is running out.

Mixes romance with a few dead bodies.

Police officer Mattie Cobb and her police-dog partner, Robo, discover a burned body on an isolated ridge in Colorado. But as the investigation into the death gets underway, Mattie finds she has familial links to the dead man, throwing her whole life into a tailspin. When three more skeletonized bodies are found, Mattie finds herself, and her dog, have become targets of the killer.

This is book #4 in the Timber Creek K-9 Mystery series. Though part of a series, the book works well as a stand-alone. Set in a small town where not much happens aside from occasional drunken barfights, our heroine Mattie faces several challenges. As well as having a murder mystery on her hands, her own links to the dead man put her life in jeopardy. Along with local vet Cole, whose affection for Mattie grows during the adventure, the cop’s personal history and knowledge of her family is an interesting side-line to the main story. While there are a few gory bits when bodies are discovered, Ms Mizushima’s writing otherwise falls into what I’d class as a cosy mystery, with murder and romance competing for superiority. I particularly enjoyed the relationship between Mattie and her doggy pal, and the specific details of their work helped make the story realistic.

A nice cosy mystery, mixing romance with a few dead bodies.

Another very enjoyable, gripping tale

Thoroughly enjoyed this book in the series. The characters are developing further, and I’m still rooting for them. Gripping developments that kept me engaged. Nancy Wu’s voice is easy to listen to and her characterisation is good.

Thrilling!

I've listened to this series at every opportunity since I discovered it last week. The stories just get better and better. This one had me full on sobbing, I'm a total sucker for human/dog bonds and this story just had me gripped. There's also something very captivating about the way the mountains and terrain are described. I cannot wait to get started on the next one.

I am really enjoying this book series!

Another solid mystery from Margaret Mizushima with an outstanding performance from Nancy Wu's narration. I binged this in two days. I love the characters and Mattie and Robo. I want a dog but I'm allergic, which sucks. The story was very good but also very sad. I am very interested to hear the next book!

Entertaining, listen, and a good series, but at times, I just wanted to shake the lead character.

Hmmmm

I’m not sure how many more books have to have a close friend, family member or neighbour die. It’s like reading a “murder she wrote” book, you don’t want to know the characters as you are either going to die, be kidnapped or accused of murder. I’ll try one more book in the hope it’s going to be a good old mystery that isn’t actually related to the main characters…
