About this listen

It is 1941 and Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer, is posted to the Greek island of Cephallonia as part of the occupying forces. At first he is ostracised by the locals, but as a conscientious soldier, whose main aim is to have a peaceful war, he proves in time to be civilised, humorous - and a consummate musician. When the local doctor's daughter's letters to her fiancé go unanswered, the working of the eternal triangle seems inevitable. But can this fragile love survive as the war gets closer and the lines are drawn between invader and defender?

Loved this book from start to finish, narrator was brilliant! Book was both fabulously witty and sardonic and at times sad and full of emotion. I didn’t want it to end!

Sublime

The writing is generous in description without being winding. An engaging tale of romance and horror and beauty in the simple things.

Beautifully written and read

This was an unexpected pleasure; having seen the unmemorable film a few years ago, I only bought this because of the high ratings. They were totally deserved. De Bernieres’ use of language and knowledge of the Greek society were impeccable, as was Michael Maloney’s performance. This was an utter gem which will leave an impression on me for years.
