Carrie Soto is the greatest player the world has ever seen.

But six years after her last match, she watches a young British tennis player steal her world record - and Carrie knows she has to go back and reclaim her rightful place at the top. Even if the world doesn't believe in her. Even if it almost breaks her.

This is a story about the cost of greatness and the burden of fame.

The fight for a place in history is about to begin . . .

Critic reviews

A portrait of female ambition in all its raw and divine glory, Carrie Soto will stay with you long after the last page is turned (Erin Kelly)

An exhilarating, immersive and gripping ode to the cost of greatness, this is Taylor Jenkins Reid's best book yet. Carrie Soto is an icon for the ages. Five stars, ten out of ten, an A+ and more from me! (Laura Jane Williams)
There's something about Carrie I will take forward with me in my life, and be a little better for. This book comes out in a few short weeks and you should preorder it. It made me cry twice, and when I finished reading, I had to sit for a minute with the hole it left in my chest . . . just order it (Emily Henry)

So much Spanish!

The author is making a point that her readers should have a grasp of basic Spanish. A point which is made explicitly by a character in the book. Although this is a admirable stance, it’s not really applicable to those who live in countries where this book is sold, but there are few Spanish speakers.

This means there is a lot of Spanish in this, mostly it’s understandable from context but near the end there are whole chunks of dialogue which were not understandable to me.

The narrator is decent enough and it’s clear who is speaking. A couple minor characters aren’t good, especially the female Australian voice which made me physically cringe.

Story wise this was not as interesting to me as Daisy Jones or Evenlyn Hugo, but I enjoyed it and thought the exploration of parent/child relationships and dependency very interesting. A passing knowledge of tennis is helpful to following the narrative and TJR has obviously done research into the subject.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

Throughly enjoyed this. Beautiful writing, I’m loving this ear of TJR. I’m not really a fan of tennis, I’ll occasionally watch a match, but I really got into the strategy talks and the discussions of the games. The use of different narrators for the ‘sports news’ was a compelling addition . The main narrators English accent is a little cringe but the rest of the narration is well performed and enjoyable .
I was really rooting for Carrie and her Dad throughout, there were a couple of things I wanted a little more of, but overall I really loved it and it will probably be going into my top 10!

Dodgy accents

The narrator’s British accent was bad to the point of being offensive.

I always enjoy the author’s novels, but this wasn’t my favourite.

Didn't like the narrator + boring story

Even at 1.2x, the Spanish parts are too slow (and cringey). The story is quite boring (except maybe for a tennis lover or a professional athlete - I'm neither of those, so ...).

Boring

Storyline is dated, boring and unsurprising. Characters are dull and have little depth. Total waste of time.

Incredible.novel

Such a talented writer. These characters feel real. I love the.way in which.different novels by Taylor interact. Awesome, highly recommended. The newsreader passages are a great touch, nicely performed here.

A disappointing listen for me

I really looked forward to this as I adored Daisy Jones and the Six and also Evelyn Hugo. But I just could not get into this and my mind would drift constantly whilst listening. Maybe I just need to come back to it at a later date with the actual book, as its the narrator that can make or break a book. But for now, it was a DNF for me.

Should have believed the reviews

This is literally ALL about Tennis, no other story so if you don't like Tennis chat then swerve this!! Also why employ male actors to do the commentary but not an English actor to do the English people. The accent was so cringe!! Not TJR best, not like her others.

Frustratingly gripping

The tenacity and defiance of the main character both frustrated me and hooked me. No love of tennis is needed to understand the passions of this book

Loved it!

An exciting and moving story. Particularly great if you yourself have ever played a competitive sport. And if you love tennis, then this is for you. One of my favourite stories from this amazing author. Just a few characters but you feel as though you really get to know them. ♥️♥️♥️
