Summary
At 01:23:40 on April 26th 1986, Alexander Akimov pressed the emergency shutdown button at Chernobyl's fourth nuclear reactor. It was an act that forced the permanent evacuation of a city, killed thousands, and crippled the Soviet Union. The event spawned decades of conflicting, exaggerated, and inaccurate stories.
This book, the result of five years of research, presents an accessible but comprehensive account of what really happened - from the desperate fight to prevent a burning reactor core from irradiating eastern Europe, to the self-sacrifice of the heroic men who entered fields of radiation so strong that machines wouldn't work, to the surprising truth about the legendary "Chernobyl diver", all the way through to the USSR's final show-trial. The historical narrative is interwoven with a story of the author's own spontaneous journey to Ukraine's still-abandoned city of Pripyat and the wider Chernobyl Zone.

A good summary of the incident, but....
It is a good summary of the incident and the events that occurred thereafter. However, the author also writes about their own personal visit to Ukraine/Chernobyl and this is of little interest to those that are keen to know about the incident, how it occurred and how it was (or is being) managed - in my opinion of course. The format of the book tends to be; one chapter on the incident, one chapter on the authors trip, one chapter on the incident and one chapter on their trip etc. I ended up skipping whole chapters as a result. Apart from that it's well worth a listen and those I have recommended it to also agree.

informative and easy to listen.
very good! A complex topic made accessible and interesting. I highly recommended. I've always been curious of what happened in Chernobyl and the lasting effect of the aftermath. This was very helpful and easy to follow.

A Chernobyl travelogue
An interesting book, part travelogue, part history of Chernobyl’s reactor 4 disaster, let down by a rather robotic and dispassionate narration reminiscent of a computer’s text to speech synthesiser.

It's ok but more a mixed bag of fact and experienc
The book is a mix of relatively high level into about what happened and the experience of the author in the zone
The narration let's it down a little further at it's very dry

Amazing book-every engineer should read it.
Amazing book-every engineer should read it - especially if working in AI. It highlights both the technical and human causes of the disaster. It also presents the history factually with many different, often contradicting, sources.

Informative and entertaining
A great look at this disaster mixed with knowledge you can only get by seeing the place first hand. The writer is unbiased and provides some chilling detail and insight. His passion is clear and keeps your attention.
