About this listen
Shortlisted for the 2011 Costa First Novel Award. Winner of the Authors' Club Best First Novel Award.
Forty years in the future. The once-great city of Bohane on the west coast of Ireland is on its knees, infested by vice and split along tribal lines.
There are the posh parts of town, but it is in the slums and backstreets of Smoketown, the tower blocks of the Northside Rises and the eerie bogs of Big Nothin' that the city really lives.
For years, the city has been in the cool grip of Logan Hartnett, the dapper godfather of the Hartnett Fancy gang. But there's trouble in the air. They say his old nemesis is back in town; his trusted henchmen are getting ambitious; and his missus wants him to give it all up and go straight... And then there's his mother.

Hmmmmmm
Okay, to start with getting your head around the slang and the Irish accent takes some time. I loved this book for its narrative and the use of langue and is an entirely new style of reading for me. Sadly the characters lack any kind of warmth and the plot is very thin and left me disappointed this could have been a masterpiece with some more plots and twists but ended up very flat. Apart from these negatives, the book remains in my mind and is worth a go

Stunning
I’ve read the book twice and I’m in awe of the way Kevin Barry has created this city that feels like a character in its own right, and such memorable protagonists. I can’t write a review that properly expresses how blown away I was by this book - the audio book is just delicious. Amazing!

indescribable acts told beautifully
this is a masterpiece of story and language brought together in a way that takes the reader to Bohane and leaves them incredulous at such terrible scenes and the words Kevin Barry conjures to describe them.

Hypnotic
Soaked up every mesmerising word of it. Would book a flight to Bohane but...Covid put a stop to that.

Kevin Barry reading his own work is just wonderful.
The story is odd and incredibly told. Kevin Barry’s characters and world is something everyone should experience.

Sex, Drugs, Fashion, Feuds and lots of Violence
This is a very original novel that is beautifully read by the author and, heaven knows, it would make an amazing film or TV series. Don't expect an easy ride though as it is not an immediately accessible narrative and it does make the listener/reader work for their rewards but once you do tune in it is poetically beautiful with utterly gorgeous imagery. It is highly original but also has echoes of Clockwork Orange, Mad Max and Peaky Blinders with the added ingredient of melancholic Irish mysticism, romance and ultra - violence. That's a powerful cocktail in my estimation. Anyone who loves language and the poetry of language will adore this novel.
