About this listen
In this best-selling book, one of America's most distinguished psychologists crystallises the great progress that has been made in the development of the techniques and basic philosophy of counselling. Carl Rogers gives a clear exposition of procedures by which individuals who are being counselled may be assisted in achieving for themselves new and more effective personality adjustments.
Contemporary psychology derives largely from the experimental laboratory or from Freudian theory. It is preoccupied with minute aspects of animal and human behaviour or with psychopathology. But there have been rebels, including Carl Rogers, Gordon Allport, Abraham Maslow and Rollo May, who felt that psychology and psychiatry should aim higher and be more concerned with growth and potentiality in man. The interest of such a psychology is in the production of harmoniously mature individuals, given that we all have qualities and possibilities infinitely capable of development. Successful development makes us more flexible in relationships, more creative and less open to suggestion and control.
This book is a mature presentation of the non-directive and related points of view in counselling and therapy. The final chapter presents a formal treatment of the psychological theory which is basic to the whole client-centered point of view, not only in counselling but in all interpersonal relations.
This edition marks the 70th anniversary of first publication and includes a new introduction from Rogers' granddaughter Frances Fuchs, PhD.

Absolutely as should be
Brilliant book. A classic, serious work so anything other than calm, unobtrusive narration would have detracted.

the narrator is not bad
the book has complex ideas and some abstract thoughts without real examples. it is very well suited that the narrator reads very clear and not so fast. this makes it easy to follow and not need to constantly pause or go back. I would recommend this book but only for professionals or students. not so good for general reading.

Enlightening and Lucid
The narrator takes Roger's dense prose and lifts it into a form easy to absorb and understand.

important
amazingly important book for anyone interested in person centred therapy. unfortunately they had run out of people to narrate so used a dalek instead.

This is an excellent look at the therapeutic relationship
I found the book rich in detail concerning the therapeutic relationship, including studies as to its benefits and success. I particularly loved the tone of the book, it was both curious and humble.
I even had a psychological insight in the last chapter as a result of listening to the details about self and experience.
Realising that I was in a constant state of struggle concerning a particular aspect of my experience.
I think that particular struggle has exhaused itself as the issue has been brought under the umbrella of self (as well as experience).
highly recommend 👌

Compelling writing, apparently lost on narrator
Rogers' early work stands up well and contains much to inspire. The narrational style is flat and oddly detached. no real attempt is made to inflect the work with the writer's humanistic, empathetic approach or to properly reflect the therapeutic effects and process studied or how much exciting new ground was being broken.

Very badly narrated. Avoid.
The narrators voice is so monotone, it's hard to hear. annoying to listen to. It's a terrible disappointment. Please re-record. Clearly I'm not alone in this thinking. Very badly narrated, fractured and dull.
