FROM THE BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF FIREWATCHING AND NIGHTHAWKING

'A rollercoaster ride of a thriller . . . will keep you hanging on by your fingertips until the tense final moments' PETER ROBINSON
_____________________________

THE DARKNESS FROM HIS PAST WILL FINALLY COME TO LIGHT

The death of DS Tyler’s father irrevocably changed his life. As a child, he believed Richard had killed himself but, as the years have passed, Tyler has grown convinced he was murdered.

When a cold case lands on Tyler’s desk, there’s nothing immediately notable about it, apart from the link it has to his father. Richard was investigating the same case shortly before he died.

Finally, Tyler has a tangible link to the past, one that could give him the answers he has been looking for. And while there are dangerous people who will do anything to keep him quiet, he knows he has to keep digging.

Because you’d risk anything for your family – even your life.

Entertaining, but

The story builds upon the mistakes that an assassin, who is supposed to be this mysterious and super dangerous killer machine, keeps on making. No explanation to why he's so sloppy. Maybe, he really should have retired. But this string of chances and misses undermines the work that the protagonists had put into unravelling the mystery, leading to an unsatisfying conclusion, at least for me. It feels almost silly at times, which is not a good feeling for a thriller.
I might have missed something, but I also don't understand why the main guy runs into dangerous situations alone and unarmed. With no means to defend himself or others, you know from the start that the situation will be resolved due to luck or chance, which ruins the suspense.
However, I can't say the book is bad. Overall, it was a good listening experience. The narrator is just excellent, perfect for this kind of story. The three main characters(the cops) are well-written and sympathetic, The dialogues are also well-written and easy to follow. Although, I didn't see how the main guy was supposed to be troubled or hard to communicate with. He was described as such, but he acted patiently and showed real empathy.
All in all it's an okay book, as long as you don't take it too seriously.

Twists and turns and the plot gets thicker

Just finished this and I can’t wait for the next in the series. The ending, when Tyler shows us again how brilliant he can be was brilliant he can be was a tiny bit tainted by the description of the location it concludes in, but other than that- edge of the seat! The characters continue to develop and we want to know even more about them even if one of them caused some disappointment- it’s all part of the beauty of getting to know people and I think these books really provide that. Excellent book.

Gripping

Who can you trust? Another gripping crime story, brilliantly read; as a Sheffield girl I can confirm the reader gives an excellent account of a native telling the story. By now I am so involved with the characters I had the same feelings of hope, suspicion and despair felt by Tyler. Certainly recommend

Brilliant book 3 in the series

I am from Sheffield so know the areas described in the book well. Which always makes it a little bit special - for me anyway. The second thing that stands out is the narrator and his absolutely brilliant Sheffield accent! One of the characters sounds so familiar. It’s fantastic. There are very very few people who attempt a Sheffield accent and actually achieve it! I’ve had to pass on so many books due to poor narration and accents.
Now to the story! Russ Thomas is honing his skill and developing the characters more and more as the series progresses. They are all likeable or at least relatable even the baddies. In this book we find a little more out about Tyler and his personal life. I do hope he explores a friendship or relationship with the hunky shrink!

Can’t wait for book 4 ! In fact 5 6 and 7

Brilliant!

Again, I was hooked and intrigued right from the very first chapter! I think this one has definitely been my favourite one of the series so far!

The audiobook narrative was absolutely fantastic and I felt fully immersed and invested in this story!

I felt this book wasn’t as busy as the first two and focused on one main case which I really liked and found it much easier to follow. I really liked how DS Tyler and Doggets relationship has bloomed over the series and how they have opened up to include Rabani now too. We also got to meet Tyler’s brother Jude in this book which was very interesting indeed and filled in a few gaps in the story of their father’s “suicide”.

The run up to the end had me sitting on the edge of my seat the very last sentence literally made me gasp!

Loads of unexpected twists and very, very clever attention to detail. I was really impressed with this book and cannot wait for the next book in the series!
