About this listen

The issue of idolatry has been with the human race for thousands of years; the subtle temptation is always to take what is good and turn it into the ultimate good, elevating it above all other things in the search for security and meaning.

In this timely and challenging book, New York pastor Timothy Keller looks at the issue of idolatry throughout the Bible - from the worship of actual idols in the Old Testament, to the idolatry of money by the rich young ruler when he was challenged by Jesus to give up all his wealth.

Using classic stories from the Bible Keller cuts through our dependence on the glittering false idols of money, sex and power to uncover the path towards trust in the real ultimate - God. Today's idols may look different from those of the Old Testament, but Keller argues that they are no less damaging.

Culturally transforming as well as biblically based, Counterfeit Gods is a powerful look at the temptation to worship what can only disappoint, and is a vital message in today's current climate of financial and social difficulty.

Great read

Speaks to the idols we all cherish. I enjoy Kellers perspective and exposition of Biblical texts showing idolatry is mans greatest problem.

A book to keep re-listening to!

Tim Keller is once again right on point with challenging yet encouraging biblical wisdom to identify the common things we set our hearts on for fulfilment and meaning in life, over Christ. Without wanting to give away ‘spoilers’, he concludes in the epilogue that this is work we will never complete, having to constantly re-examine our heart throughout our life.

So much to absorb in this book that I re-listened to it as soon as I finished. The only negative to say is that it’s a shame not to have Tim reading the book himself.

Essential listening for everyone

I will listen & relisten to this book until the truth of its warnings and insights stick. I was reminded to make my life's focus God's unparalleled act of love through Jesus' death, and to root out anything else in my life that matters to me more than that. A wonderful lifelong challenge which will only be possible through God's daily grace & mercy.

Deeply helpful

Deeply helpful and challenging - I've been a Christian 30 years and this book shed light on current and historical idols which needed dethroning. Highly recommended!
