About this listen

A masterpiece of satire, this classic has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life and foibles from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comic, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C.S. Lewis gives us the correspondence of the worldly-wise old Devil to his nephew, Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man.

The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging account of temptation, and triumph over it, ever written.

Critic reviews

"Lewis' satire is a Christian classic....[his] take on human nature is as on-target as it was when the letters were first published in 1941." ( Library Journal)

The Letter - a lost art

The content, tone and pacing is superb. Eighty years old but still so relevant for today’s world.

Astounding!

It’s eye and mind opening to look at things from the devil’s perspective. So intelligently and entertainingly written. May C.S.Lewis rest in God’s peace and mercy.

A true modern classic

Believe it or not, it's hard to review a book that is this good. How do you find the right words to express how compulsive the listening expirience becomes by the end? How do you convey just how much it has effected and changed you as a person? Expressions like 'entertaining', 'thought provoking' and 'razor sharp satire' just don't do it justice. All I can really say is this: buy it now!

How not to be Screwtaped!

I've listened to this before, about 5/6 years ago. At that time I was just discovering C S Lewis and found this very amusing. I re listened to it today and, because my personal circumstances have changed since I first heard it, I now heard it as a cautionary tale, as clues to some of my thinking or behaviour! It truly opened my eyes to the possible adverse influences in my life!

So, if this is your first venture into C S Lewis, or the first time buying this in audiobook - this is a great listen. Either as a lighthearted piece, or as a 'How not to be Screwtaped' both are invaluable - Enjoy.

The machinations of the enemy

I'm grateful for Lewis's clear depictions of various strategies used by Satan's minions.

Well done that man.

Perhaps someone can continue the letters to bring us up to date.

Classic and insightful

Highly recommend. A book that will transform how you think. Lewis' captures a world we don't know in a way that makes it real and causes you to reflect on cynical opinions.

in the Devil's mind.

I throughly enjoyed this book. The satire is clever, consistent and funny from the first page to the last. It depicts, in a likely manner, if such thing is possible, the thinking of a devil. C.S.Lewis is a Christian but the book can be enjoyed by anyone.

Why the exemplary reviews?

Loved the authors Narnia series and was interested to see some of his other work as it was on special offer. I have to say though that this was dreadful from start to finish and if it wasn’t for the fact that it was so short, I would have stopped listening before the end.
It is just a series of letters narrated, which extol the virtues of manipulating people towards the devil and evil deeds. There is nothing clever about it and it is certainly not gripping in anyway. Clearly just the polar-opposite views of the author whom was known to be a devout Christian. He very much comes from the angle that Christianity is the only way for the world to survive and look what happens if you turn away from it.
I truly don’t know how anybody could find this entertaining, but these reviews suggest I am in a minority of one so there you go. I must just have very bad taste.
