Summary

A T'au Empire novel

Fresh from his victory on Arkunasha, the young Commander Farsight leads a crusade to reclaim colonies lost to mankind's Imperium. But stiff resistance will test him to his limits and beyond.

Listen to it because: Phil Kelly continues his look at the life of Commander Farsight with his first campaign against the full might of the Imperium and shows how the T'au Empire's technological superiority fares against Imperial grit.

The story: the t'au are a mysterious alien race, diametrically opposed to the Imperium of Man in every possible way - in their mastery of technology, methods of warfare and social structure. Yet in galactic terms they are a young race, and naïve when it comes to the manipulations of Chaos. When promising young Commander Farsight is promoted to lead a crusade across the Damocles Gulf to reclaim the T'au Empire's lost colonies from mankind, the mood is one of optimism. With their mighty fleet, and superior weapons and machines, how can their endeavour possibly fail? However, despite a parade of early successes, Commander Farsight soon faces enemies he wasn't anticipating and finds not only his courage but also his soul tested to the very limit.

Written by Phil Kelly. Narrated by Helen McAlpine and Andrew Wincott.

Get it read !

I must have read about 30 or 40 books from Warhammer 40K I must have returned at least 10. The one I love ...I really love ...This fits in that section.

I'm the guy that doesn't like bolter porn
I dislike the majority of the books after book 5 of the Horus heresy
I send my back any siege of Terra books that are filler and chaf
I love Manflayer, Eisenhorn, Gideon, Bequin!, Luther and Bellerasious Cal

So now you know I like a really good story, great imagination and great characters and you have it all in this book. I can't wait to see the rest.

Greatest good

It’s difficult not to like the majority of the Tau as apart from the Ethereals the other castes really want to improve life for all species, the glaring differences between space marines and their psychotic tendencies and the fire caste is like the eye of terror, vast and depthless! Farsight is finally opening his eyes to reality in this book and I really wish there was sequel!! Superbly narrated

The greater good, doesn't make them good guys!

Very good introduction to the Tau race. Tau are the newest race in the 40k universe. They are very expansionist, masters of diplomacy and deceit, you get the impression they would rather expand the empire without firing a shot, winning "hearts and minds/propaganda".

The Tau cast system is very interesting, they view war as a means to an ends. The Tau "firecast"(warrior class) study the art of war more as a science and dogmatic in approach but follow the rules and tactics literally by the book. mathematical and statistical in their approach to warfare. The Tau class system really aren't keen on outside the box thinking and view off the cuff tactics as borderline insubordination, that will get you pushished, even if you got the desired results.... The other Tau casts view the firecast's with suspicion and trepidation, probably because they don't want firecast Tau to get any ideas above there station.

I really got an eastern/Japanese feel to this Xenos race, espeshally in the battlesuits and the feel for technology, they seem very 'manga'. The narration was really good. Would recommend!

Great listen

Crisis of Faith was my first listen of a T’au story. Very, very well written and exceptionally well narrated. The inclusion of a female voice for some characters really helped the story. Highly recommend.

A refreshing change

I usually listen to Space Marine stories so it was nice to see the universe through a different race. The characters are well developed, and the story flows nicely. Really enjoyed this book.

cant wait for the next

Really enjoyed this one....giving a lot more background on farsight and the 8. Im really enjoying disliking the ethereal caste , ever more so after this book....really entertaining. good fight scenes, decent dialogue, and plenty of little tidbits if you are familiar with the wider background of farsights circumstances.....looking forward t the next one.

This was not just wrong!

This is not what a Tau fan deserves, this is a space marine fan writing a tau book. Other than criss suits fighting in melee, the rest of the tau military is barely mentioned.
Farsight should be a strategist is just either, using basic ambushes or having highly specific counters to threats he didn't know about. For example a lie bomb bomb to counter a truth demon when he doesn't know about the warp and only heard a space marine mention the word demon once.
The outside view of the imperium and a look into tau society was the only gems.

Exhausting to listen to

I'm half way through and struggling to finish it. The writing is decent - not great - but decent. The author does well at capturing the naivety of the T'au, although the overall tone is bordering on the melodrama.

My real issue is with the narrator - he is completely over the top. Every line is delivered as if it is life or death. Doesn't matter if Farsight is eating breakfast or in deadly battle, every word is uttered with high drama. I wish there was more colour brought to the text, so as a listener I can breath and feel the flow. Ultimately it takes away the high stakes moments (since everything is high stake). A real shame.
