Summary

Keggie Carew grew up in the gravitational field of an unorthodox father who lived on his wits and dazzling charm. As his memory begins to fail, she embarks on a quest to unravel his story, and soon finds herself in a far more consuming place than she had bargained for.

Tom Carew was a maverick, a left-handed stutterer, a law unto himself. As a member of an elite SOE unit he was parachuted behind enemy lines to raise guerrilla resistance in France, then Burma, in the Second World War. But his wartime exploits are only the start of it....

is a manhunt. Keggie takes us on a spellbinding journey, in peace and war, into surprising and shady corners of history, her rackety English childhood, the poignant breakdown of her family, the corridors of dementia and beyond. As Keggie pieces Tom - and herself - back together again, she celebrates the technicolour life of an impossible, irresistible, unstoppable man.

Foreword and afterword read by the author.

Wonderful story

Writer has done a mountain of relevant research, but the story shines through. The author is wise, honest, funny and kind - good to spend time with her.

Excellent

I loved this book. What a well documented family making for an interesting listen. The descriptions transported me everywhere and the narration was the best I’ve ever heard. I’m just sad it’s finished. Highly recommend.

Superb

I loved every moment of this audiobook. A reviewer has written that the book was too long, but I wouldn't have missed a word of it. Better still, the reading is fully up to the superb, funny, heartbreaking story. Thank you, Peggy Carew.

A real struggle

Did not enjoy at all. Confusing as an audio book. Would not recommend at all.

Excellent read

I loved the way Keggie moved in time through her dad’s story backwards to the present moment. This was so apt as she observed such an accomplished man then struggle in the world as his illness took him over.

A charming and interesting read

A mix of boys own adventure, the impact of an ageing parent and an interesting / eccentric family. Very entertaining

What an emotional experience

Keggie Carew's dad Tom had a remarkable war, but the qualities he needed as a behind-the-lines guerilla did not servive him well in civilian life. In this book, she researches and narrates his wartime experiences, his post war failings as a businessman, husband and father and his descent into dementia. It's sad, it's uplifting and it's an audiobook you don't want to end because you know what the end will be.

A worthy investment of your time

A complex story that flips back and forth through time in the lives of several generations of a family, the main thread following Tom Carew, who has had an amazing life as part of a guerrilla group during WW2 in France and Burma.
Beautifully interwoven with the effects of his dementia which lifts it from being a sad story to one that helps you see the personality beneath the disease. The prose is written with a care and lyricism that makes you appreciate the quality of the writing. It could be confusing at times with the multiple generations and changes in time but Pippa Haywood gives a fantastic narration which provides clarity as well as compelling personalities and a flawless French accent.
