Summary

January 1937. Jack Miller has just about run out of options. His shoes have worn through, he can't afford to heat his rented room in Tooting, and he longs to use his training as a specialist wireless operator instead of working in his dead-end job. When he is given the chance to join an arctic expedition, as communications expert, by a group of elite Oxbridge graduates, he brushes off his apprehensions and convinces himself to join them.

As the young men set sail from a gloomy Britain on the verge of war, Jack feels the overwhelming excitement of not knowing what lies ahead. Little can he imagine the horrors that await him in their destination, Gruhuken, a place that cannot escape the savage echo of its past.

A Masterpiece- the finest audiobook I have ever heard.

This is an outstanding work of both literature and narration. I cannot recommend highly enough. The narrators performance is incredible, the story is gripping and compelling. I couldn't stop thinking about it when I wasn't listening- my first waking thought- "gruhooken"....
So glad I came across this story- Michelle Paver is an inspirational and a very fine author, the best.

Great narration gives thrill to a dark story...

The story is well written. You really feel that you are there with the protagonist in the quiet and stillness of isolatileach moment. Michelle Paver really wrote this story to life.

Good show , old chap ;)

Chillingly atmospheric.

Had me sleeping with the lights on. Dark in every sense; recommend absolutely. A must-listen.

Compulsive

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and listened to it in just two sittings. It's not so much a ghost story as a tale of the human mind in isolation - and what happens to Jack when the dark closes in. I won't give away the plot but the story is written mostly in the form of diary entries and the first person narrative makes for compulsive reading. Ms. Paver is a new author for me and this is beautifully written. Her descriptions of the setting polar sun, arctic winter and total isolation - to name but a few - make me want to read more from her. I've downloaded a few Audible books recently and have to say that this is by far the best narration I've listened to. It's one of those books which you simply cannot put down (or should that be 'switch off'?!)

Excellent performance great story

I really enjoyed this story. It's beautifully atmospheric and grabs you from the outset. A strange ghost story but also a story of love and friendship. The landscape is almost a character all of its own and is described so well it's like being there. Highly recommend.

Chilling story in the Arctic!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It was a chilling tale. Left alone in an Arctic outpost the main character conjures up his own nightmares - or are they real? It's being set in 1937 means his isolation is complete.

Have you listened to any of Jeremy Northam’s other performances? How does this one compare?

The narration without a doubt added to the atmosphere of the tale.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book made me want to keep reading and gave a real frisson of fear.

Hypnotic and Engrossing

The story builds up slowly, the environment as much a character as expedition members. A story to listen to attentively.

Gripping!

Couldn't stop listening, finished it in one day! Narrator has the perfect voice and rhythm. The story is wonderfully dark and ominous, chilling and subtle. All told from the point of view of Jack, you get a true sense of who he is and what he's going through. Would recommend to anyone wanting an unsettling listen!
