What did you like most about Dave Gorman Vs The Rest of the World?

A great idea for a book, read in a funny and engaging way. My hometown of Stockport getting a mention was a bonus.

What did you like best about this story?

Ticked three boxes for me, a travelogue, a history and overview of popular games and a bloody funny listen!

What about Dave Gorman’s performance did you like?

Just a great narration. He lived through it the experience, so he gets across the enjoyment, contentment of enjoying the execution of a great idea, and in one chapter his fear and confusion really well.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Lots of smile and wry chuckles.

I think Dave Gorman should have a go at writing a thriller or even a horror book.There is a disturbing chapter in the book that really had the heart going....

funny and unexpectedly emotive.

for a documentary I was not expecting to be moved this way and that. it was funny, as expected, but also edge of my seat tense and sad as well.

Absorbing listen

I love Dave Gorman and this was really enjoyable. I liked the way he described different cities and people he met with honesty and warmth, even though some of the descriptions of card games and rules were a little over long. As a Sheffielder, I loved the way he discussed this fine city. This is also not just a humorous book- there is some real soul searching in this book and he sometimes goes to some dark places. The episodic nature of the book made it ideal for listening to in lots of small sections as I tend to do- a bit out running, a bit in the car, a bit doing housework etc.

I never knew there were so many different games to be enjoyed, and u think what Dave.g did is very commendable
thus us just as good as his too much information book

Great story with a revealing finish

I've been a fan of Dave Gorman for a long time and this is probably one of his more personal stories.

The book works very well as audio and Dave's narration ebbs and flows with the narrative in a manner that only the author can achieve.

As a trip through some of the lesser known games, it really does deliver - names of games you've never heard of but really want to try - Settlers of Catan, Kubb and, in my opinion the most exciting one, Khet.

My wife and I listened to it on a long journey and it really was delightful.

Prepare yourself for a very open and personal experience with Dave.

Funny Man

What ever Dave Gorman puts his time into seems both bizarre but hughly entertaining. Aural gold for those who like a good laugh and are not afraid to giggle insanely whilst listening.

its alright

It made me laugh, and explained the games but I found the performance rather flat, unlike his tv shows, where he has an interesting voice it is just lost here

Nice guy, let down

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't let down. Dave was, by one of the people he writes about.

I have read other books by Dave and thoroughly enjoyed them. This was no different. I have never found Dave as a challenging read, and I don't think he intends to be. He is funny and easy going, both as a person and as a writer. This is a really good book to listen to when out walking (when I listen to most of my books) and he lets you eat up the miles (or K's) without being aware.

If you want a book to enjoy without having to think, and also learn about new games (and new hotels in Sheffield) then this is the book for you. Don't expect too much though. The book doesn't promise it, but it does deliver enjoyment.

Pleasant tale with a sting in its tail

What made the experience of listening to Dave Gorman Vs The Rest of the World the most enjoyable?

Dave is a lovely character - part nurd, part wit, part everyman. Even if he does drink rum and coke. I've always enjoyed his work - which in the main in very original. There's nobody doing quite what Dave does. That he reads it very will also helps engage with the story. You genuinely feel like you are living a portion of his life with him - and it's a nice life to be living.

What other book might you compare Dave Gorman Vs The Rest of the World to, and why?

I'd compare it to his Googlewhack adventure - though that earlier book is far edgier - far more spiced with danger. This Dave is a happier and more grounded individual.

Any additional comments?

It's great - entertaining, funny and - yes - informative. Though be warned - nothing much actually happens until the final hour. He meets people. He plays games. They are normal people. He enjoys himself most of the time. There's very little tension. The final encounter breaks the mould and yet remains believeable. This is how real people behave in situations like this, especially when one of them is a little crazy - and it's not Dave.
