Summary

When Joe Christie's fishing boat is swept onto Tentsmuir beach during a fierce storm, a man's mutilated body is found in the hold. DCI Andy Gilchrist of St Andrews CID is called in to investigate. But his murder investigation deepens when he learns that Joe Christie and his boat have been missing for three years.

The police pathologist, Dr Rebecca Cooper, retrieves a five pound note from the dead man's throat. Is this the killer's calling card? And whatever happened to Joe Christie? Cooper offers Gilchrist a clue to the dead man's identity - a scar from a recent operation to repair a bone shattered by a bullet.

The dead man is found to have been on the payroll of big Jock Shepherd, Scotland's premier crime patriarch, and when three more of Shepherd's men turn up brutally murdered, Gilchrist fears a tectonic shift in the criminal underworld.

Gilchrist and his partner, DS Jessie Janes, set off along a murderous trail where they uncover a plot involving drug shipments and police corruption, and come face to face with a man for whom human life means nothing.

Justs get better and better.

I've been with Andy Gilchrist since book 1 and they just get better and better. TF Muir is an author who knows how to build the characters until you feel that they are in and out of your house every day. You are with them every step - the ups and the downs. The humour is missing from Jessie in this one but with this story line that's no surprise. How much can one person cope with? It's one thing fighting criminals but when there are enemies within it's a wonder that they keep going. Keep it up Andy.
With David Monteath narrating I can hear these characters only with his voice. I hope he stays with TF Muir or the characters just wouldnt be the same.
Looking forward to the next one, now, please.
The Scottish crime writers scene is at an all time high.

Another winner featuring Andy Gilchrist

I love the DCI Gilchrist books. The characters are so well formed that they feel like family. I'm dreading getting to the end of the series. I'll have to start from the beginning again. The storylines are dark and engrossing and Jessie is a joy. She's the perfect foil for the even-tempered Gilchrist. Don't like Cooper. What woman would? Expertly and brilliantly narrated which is a big part of the enjoyment.

Another good story

Another good thriller, T F Muir never fails to deliver.

As usual David Monteith's narration is spot on.

Left Me Wanting Muir!

While this probably won't go down as one of my absolute favourites in this series it's a really decent listen. Gilchrist and his chirpy sidekick Jessie are back with a quite intriguing mystery which starts a little better than it ends. A very mysterious abandoned fishing vessel puzzles are favourite Fife detectives and meanwhile, their families and personal relationships turn up their stress levels. It is of course still the silken-tongued David Monteith at the microphone and as ever he does not disappoint in any way.

It's a very enjoyable extension of a series I am really enjoying though it didn't quite catch hold of me as much as some of the previous ones. The characters just seemed slightly muted but it delivers an intriguing mystery, has genuine atmosphere and a decent ending which has a question all of its own to answer! The key thing is that when it finished it definitely left me wanting more . . .

Great story but

This is a great story but spoiled for me by the narrator not pronouncing “Anster” correctly. Really think somebody should have picked up on that part of the joy of these stories is that they are based in a part of Fife I know well.

Enjoyable!

Really enjoy this series. Wouldn't quite describe it as gripping but it does keep my interest and I certainly do enjoy it. Likeable characters, brought to life by outstanding narration. Great story line, full of twists and turns. Would highly recommend.

Not the best in series, but still a good listen

I did actually get lost in bits of this story and had to go back and re-set the scene. But it was still a good listen.
I really struggle with Jessie Janes. She is so rude and aggressive and I really don’t think such behaviour would normally be tolerated. But then again, I don’t get mixed with the police so who am I to say?
