Summary

Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard, who is drawn into the investigation.

Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

"Every family deserved an answer."

When a woman reported that a friend had gone missing, the husband, Professor Knight seemed both haughty and unconcerned when contacted by the police. He did, however, promise to keep in touch. He did not. Instead, he also disappeared. DCI Craig Gilliard, unbeknownst to his colleagues, already had reason to dislike the man: not only had he been vocal about police inefficiency over a previous high profile case, he had also married the woman Craig.had been dating and loved in his youth. Now it looked Knight had killed her.

This is an exceptional murder thriller, a police procedural evolving over more than a year. It also builds a good character picture, not only of Craig himself but also,to a lesser extent, the other players, and using nice snappy phrases such as, 'Hard as dressing with chop sticks'. Lots of detailed forensic stuff but kept brief and understandable and never boring. The story itself is involved but nevertheless easy to follow and, even though I had anticipated the ending from early in the novel, this never spoiled my enjoyment and anticipation and this was at least in part down to the excellent performance of narrator Marston York.

My first encounter of a book by Nick Louth: very enjoyable and he had obviously researched well. I look forward to finding more written by him and recommended The Body a the Marsh to all who enjoy police procedurals.

Enjoyable British Detective

I purchased this in a for 1 sale as I thought I'd try this author. Enjoyable first listen a little far fetched but good escapism, the sort of read to take on holiday.
Will try the next in the series

Rather predictable.

I guessed the twist very early in the book, and quite a bit of the story seemed unlikely or even rather ridiculous at times. Some parts were enjoyable but I wouldn’t rush to listen to it.

Very good story

The first Nick Louth book I have read, but excellent plot, well written and very well read. A routine detective story with a twist in the plot - you may put may not see it coming, but it doesn't lessen the story at all. I will be looking out for other books by this author.

Good story

I enjoyed the story but found the narrator was good, but struggles with believable voices.
