About this listen

For millionaire jockey Alan York, winning is a bonus. For Joe Nantwich, victory means no cushy backhanders; and for Bill Davidson, front running on strongly fancied Admiral, triumph means murder. His own.

Dead cert to read

I like this book very much as the story moves along all the time and does not drag leaving you to wait and wait for the story to continue

Another wonderfully-written Dick Francis story

As always with seemingly every Dick Francis book, the story is so well-written that it provides first class entertainment all round. I won't spoil the surprises by referring to the details of the story, apart from to say that the protection racket has been given a brilliant twist in this story; do just go ahead and enjoy listening to it yourself. The narration by Tony Britton takes the beautifully-written words into the realms of a superlative one-man show; a masterly performance as always from this very talented man.

Stone Cold Classic

The first Dick Francis and one of his best. Manages to combine an excellent plot with credible characters whilst at the same time immersing one into the world of horse racing. This may have been written in the '60s, but isn't at all dated. Tony Britten is a superb reader and perfect for Francis, although the sound quality is not particularly good.

Gripping yarn well narrated

Good easy listening: Mr Britten’s narration is excellent: his voice catches the different accents and emotions perfectly. This book was written in 1962, so as well as being a good story it’s an insight into another era.

Very good as usual

Great story, likeable characters, excellent narration. The quality of sound deteriorated in the last third of the book, however still worth listening. Bolinda should improve the sound quality of some of the Francis' books.
