Summary

St. Andrews, Scotland: Renovation works on the famous Old Course golf course uncovers the remains of a body in a shallow grave—two bullet holes in the skull. DNA confirms the victim as Rab Shepherd, the missing brother of Scotland's late crime patriarch, Jock Shepherd. But Rab pulled out of the family business over twenty years ago, and moved to Australia where he allegedly lived an honest and wealthy life. This body confirms otherwise.

Why was Rab killed? And who would risk killing him, knowing he was big Jock's brother?

DCI Andy Gilchrist and his associate, DS Jessie Janes, are assigned the murder investigation, and soon uncover a trail of executions and torture, treachery and betrayal, and ultimately a gangland secret so powerful it could shake the UK government to its core...

Critic reviews

"Rebus did it for Edinburgh. Laidlaw did it for Glasgow. Gilchrist might just be the bloke to put St Andrews on the crime fiction map." (Daily Record)

"A truly gripping read, with all the makings of a classic series." (Mick Herron)

"Gripping and grisly, with plenty of twists and turns that race along with black humour." (Craig Robertson)

Best yet!

Great narrator - he plays a major role in the continuing success of this series of books. I always struggle with piecing everyone together - always - yet it doesn't ever distract from the overall pleasure.

Always good but this one I have found hard to put down.

I became totally immersed in the audible book and of course, the narration was the perfect. Thank you David Monteath

Fantastic!

Marvelous storytelling as ever. Fantastic narration by the brilliant David Monteith. . Love love love DCI Gilchrist and all the characters.
… but just one maddening little irritation….please please please Mr Muir, no more endless use of the words ‘chuckle, chuckles or chuckled’ there are other words for the same thing and this were used so so often I wanted to scream! Sorry!!!

Never fails to be excellent

The DCI Gilchrist series is a joy to read and to hear. I can only applaud both the author and narrator for the continued excellence.
The plots are original and satisfying and never fail to confuse the reader - in the best possible way!

A bit predictable

Too many simple solutions to the theme & too little observance of modern police restrictions on involvement so was a pleasant but definitely unreal event

Towser T

Another worthwhile novel with authentic sounding sound track by David Monteath. Not his best but enjoyable all the way through. If you want a good crime novel, which can stand on its own despite being part of a series, then this is worth purchasing. I am already in the process of purchasing the next in the series.
