In a small Arizona town, a man counts his blessings: a loving wife, two teenage daughters, and a job that allows him to work at home. Then "The Store" announces plans to open a local outlet, which will surely finish off the small downtown shops. Fear has made Sue Wing run from the darkened school and into night, a fear so powerful she can only name it using the Cantonese myths of her grandmother: Cup-hu-girngsi, the corspe who drinks blood. Story
For the town of Randall, Arizona, the terror starts quietly, oddly - a senile woman in her 80s becomes pregnant. Then the town's beloved minister mysteriously disappears, leaving his church and home hideously defiled by blasphemous obscenities scrawled in blood. Farmers going out to their fields in the morning find their herds of goats slaughtered. Then, as the terror intensifies, the farmers themselves are massacred. The town begins to smell of death, and the trust which has bound neighbors to one another turns to ashes.

Opulent doesn't begin to describe the Arizona getaway where Lowell Thurman, his wife Rachel, and their three young sons have come for one glorious week. Everything at The Reata is perfect - although Rachel is a bit unnerved by the openly lustful gaze of one of the gardeners, something she doesn't mention to Lowell. Nor does he tell her about the frightening sensation he has in the pool of hands clutching at him, trying to pull him under.

From the mind of the man Stephen King calls "a master of the macabre", comes a brilliant new collection of no-punches-pulled horror stories, some never-before-collected and many originals that have never been published anywhere before. Bentley Little can take the innocuous, twist it around, and write a story that will change your way of thinking. Walking Alone: Short Stories is a shining example of his talent to scare you, creep you out, and make you shudder.

Story
I've had to move out of the city and into the house I inherited here, in the idyllic fishing village of Porthcove, but only for as long as it takes to sell it. You see, I need the money, so I've started seeing some of the locals, you know, as patients, but I tell you, there's something really disturbing about charming neighbors sharing chilling secrets. And it isn't just that. It's the other things. Strange, inexplicable things. It started with odd smells, creepy sounds, and then the intruders...oh God, the intruders.

Gruesome horror novel just up my street.
As a Stephen King fan I love a classic horror story and having read everything he has done i have been looking for a new horror author to get my teeth into. I came across Bentley Little whilst browsing and read The Mailman in less than a week.
Death Instinct is gory yes, but it should be its a story of murder and terror. But there is also a good story behind the horror and Bentley Little is great at building up the characters, which you really get to love in the story and hate as there are one or two characters that are pure evil.
There were a few times I was listening to this in bed at night and had to pop the bedside lamp on as I was creeped out by the lurking shape of the psychotic killer on the loose.
I've heard bad reviews about the narrator, I admit it took a couple of chapters to get used to his voice, but I did and actually felt his voice really could have been the macho police officer Alan.
Give it a try i enjoyed it and was able to escape into a nightmare of a murderer on the loose. We're a few scary chapters and yes very bloody thirsty by why not. If you are a true horror fan then this is for you !

Enjoyable but the synopsis is misleading
Enjoyable book, similar in style to other books by Bentley Little; a gory, horrifying and character focused mystery thriller with an admittedly pretty wacky resolution.
But the synopsis here on Audible is so completely unrelated to the book itself that you'll feel tricked after reading it! The scene described there is just not related to the story. A more appropriate synopsis could be :
"Cathy still remembered the murders across the street from her from when she was a child, and now someone new has moved in. Across town a detective is on the hunt for a serial killer with a horrifying flare for the macabre."

'WHAT IF' is what this story asks.Spoilers Ahead!
what if a person who is an idiot savant, can murder instead of playing a piano masterfully or be a genius at math, what if instead he is a genius at killing is the basis of this story. Now i can see how people who have loved ones that are special needs can become offensive to this material but if that's the case why put yourself to read this novel, if you want some advice do what i do before purchasing a book check out reviews, gain a knowledge of the summarized plot.Iam a big bentley little fan and im pretty sure him using a special needs person as the vilian wasn't intended to be offensive im pretty sure he was looking to do something out of the ordinary, i mean i can think of a handful of vilians in stories who have some sort of disability wether they were abused or in a wheel chair or scarred im sure its not meant to be offensive but just to add to the uniqueness of the character. Now with that being said this wasn't as good as most of littles "THE" books but it's something different, and as always David Stifles narration is on point.

Little and Stifel are a fantastic combo!
I am on a Bentley Little binge lately and I am a huge fan of Stifel’s performance of his work. The story was super weird and unexpected at every turn. The characters are enthralling and have genuine depth, even the ones that I didn’t like.
If Bentley little had a range of intensity then his books like The Store and The Handyman would be on the more chill end of the spectrum while this one is decidedly more gripping. There are a few parts that are beyond belief or impossible and I feel like the ending left me wanting more.
Overall this is a solid 4.5/5 for me and I would recommend it to anyone who likes horror/thrillers.

Idk why but I can’t with this narrator
The story is good. I like Bentley little. I found one of the scenes in the book a bit over done. I was glad when it was over. I’ve learned his books can have some odd sex stuff in it but this scene seemed to go on and on. There were no monsters or ghost in this which was cool. This narrator is not my favorite but I think he narrates a few of Bentley little’s books and I like his books so I deal with it.
