Summary

Francesca Eve, caterer extraordinaire, has come to Claremont House to work for the cream of society. A full breakfast spread? Simple. A glorious picnic lunch? Easy as pie. But a dead body for dinner was definitely not on the menu....

No sooner has Francesca Eve turned up for a jam-packed weekend of gourmet catering at a posh country house than she realizes how challenging this event is set to be. Not only are the hosts wealthy—and demanding—beyond her wildest dreams, but each of the guests is more difficult than the last. But she never expected the host to turn up dead....

Suspicion falls on everyone in the house—could there be a murderer in their midst? Is the incredibly glamorous, and now extremely rich, widow really as upset as she’s making out? What secret is the housekeeper hiding? Whose money troubles are now forgotten? As the only person without a motive, Fran’s intimate knowledge of the house party puts her in the prime position to help the police.

As rumors swirl and guests’ pasts come to light, someone else is found dead. But when the police arrest their chief suspect, Fran becomes convinced they have the wrong person—the evidence is almost too neat to be true. So she decides to strike out alone, in the country house where the killer is still staying.... Someone has killed twice to keep their secret safe. Will Fran be able to unmask them, or will this weekend turn out to be her deadliest job ever?

A cozy mystery packed with twists. If you love Faith Martin, M.C. Beaton, and The Thursday Murder Club, you’ll absolutely adore this whodunnit.

Loved it!

Loved the first one in the series and this one does not disappoint. Brilliant cosy crime story, love the characters, especially Nell, who cracks me up! Can't wait for the next one!

Ok, I might of, you know really enjoyed this book!

So I had pre-ordered this book and then downloaded it yesterday Saturday 28th May and started listening to it, I went out and got a coffee while listening to the story and then went shopping while listening to the story and then came home and prepared dinner and cooked it while listening to the story I then sat and did some work while listening to the story and then ate dinner while listening to the story and then finished some work while listening to the story... I have just completed the story at around 2.00am on Sunday 29th! Ok what can I say Emma Davies is my new favourite author. I just had a lot of fun with this, there weren't as many laugh out loud moments like in the first book but it's a solid mystery with two very likable main characters. The new detective is amazing she is too very likable and funny. There also wasn't as much banter as I would of liked as I think it's great when Adam and Fran have their little disagreements. But overall these are my petty quibbles. With a wonderful narrator Mira Dovreni this is a true gem that I would highly recommend. The ending was particularly nice and very refreshing... Whatever that may of been?

Nice story but the dialogue is really poor

I’ve listened to both books in this series now. The stories are nice, comfortable and enjoyable. Great if you want to switch off. The writing is poor though. It really needs a ghost writer. The dialogue sounds as if it were written for small children. Everything is explained to death. It’s clumsy and unrealistic. The narration which is also clumsy and stereotypical doesn’t help either. I think with a well written book perhaps the narrator would be good and a good narrator could bring the book to life more realistically but the combination is poor. I’d love it if this writer had a ghost writer to help her with the prose. It’d make all the difference. I’m not sure I’ll listen to the third.

A poor successor to the first book

I really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately there are several things which let it down. The first book dd what it said on the tin, it was a cosy mystery with nice characters and a plot line that was complex enough to keep you interested, yet not so overly demanding that you couldn't easily pick up the story. The second book, by contrast, has far too many dimensionless characters and disconnected sub plots that it becomes a bit of of a rudderless ship.
