About this listen
Popular blogger Cal Newport reveals the new key to achieving success and true meaning in professional life: the ability to master distraction.
Many modern knowledge workers now spend most of their brain power battling distraction and interruption, whether because of the incessant pinging of devices, noisy open-plan offices or the difficulty of deciding what deserves their attention the most. When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve. Most of us, after all, are excruciatingly familiar with shallow work instead - distractedly skimming the surface of our workload and never getting to the important part. Newport began exploring the methods and mind-set that foster a practice of distraction-free productivity at work, and now, in Deep Work, he shows how anyone can achieve this elusive state.
Through revealing portraits of both historical and modern-day thinkers, academics and leaders in the fields of technology, science and culture, and their deep work habits, Newport shares an inspiring collection of tools to wring every last drop of value out of your intellectual capacity. He explains why mastering this shift in work practices is crucial for anyone who intends to stay ahead in a complex information economy and how to systematically train the mind to focus. Put simply: developing and cultivating a deep work practice is one of the best decisions we can make in an increasingly distracted world.

Very good, intelligent arguments backed up by evidence
Really impressed with this. I thought it might be a book that just says "doing deep work is good" but this is one of the top productivity books I've read. It covers a huge number of topics and the author acknowledges and addresses many counter arguments to his points. You can tell he's an academic, very intelligently written.

Excellent ideas well told.
Very well researched and detailed concepts with excellent examples and narrative. If you care about doing more with less then this book will help.

Just read it.
It's perfection. I know, that sounds like a bit much. But it's not. Get it.

You will change your habits but a lot unnecessary
Much of this book could have been chopped away - really all that was needed was an essay's worth, an extended blog post. I didn't really need loosely-related scientific and philosophical studies, comparisons with manual labourers and so on. However - I will absolutely heed the lessons from this book, so it has changed my life. It has given me the evidence and backing I needed to go forward living my life deeply and minimise distraction as much as possible so that I use my precious time conscientiously and not just wile it away aimlessly on my phone anymore. It has already deeply changed my relationship with my work. And to be honest, even though though a blog post would suffice, sometimes it is helpful to listen to an entire book on a subject to really get you to heed the lessons, so I'm not overly mad about it.

stick with it !
stick with it and don't listen to other books or podcasts as you will lose the train of thought. As is often the case, take your 2 or 3 nuggets from this. As someone who has to plan deep work in, disconnection is my nugget!

Good audiobook - would get the hard copy
Enjoyed this book, a lot of new information that hasn't been raised in other productivity books.
I will definitely be getting the paperback/hardcopy of this book as a can sense a lot just flew over my head and found myself constantly rewinding 30secs to keep up with the narrator when delving into more trickier/'deeper' topics.
Worth a buy nonetheless.

Great Stuff, Especially the Social Media Critique
Really enjoyed the focus on deep work, lots of good strategies to implement - reminder that Bill Gates created a new industry in less than a semester! Turn off Social Media, good ways to deal with email; seclude yourself away to do the deep work!

Good information
This is a good book to consider if you need to change the way you work. Great to listen once, but if you're taking it seriously, you will listen at least a 2nd time with pen and paper to plan and implement the change in the way that you work

I loved this book - Just Focus & Get It Done!
Would you listen to Deep Work again? Why?
Yes - after working on the first actions suggested, after I've finished the content I'm working on, I would listen again to learn and embed the next steps on the way to mastery :)
What other book might you compare Deep Work to, and why?
Mastery
