About this listen

Features audiobook exclusive extra content, including a mid-record tea break and bespoke introductions for each chapter.

Award-winning broadcasters Fi Glover and Jane Garvey don't claim to have all the answers (what was the question?), but in these hilarious and perceptive essays, they take modern life by its elasticated waist and give it a brisk going over with a stiff brush.

They riff together on the chuff of life, from pet deaths to broadcasting hierarchies, via the importance of hair dye, the perils and pleasures of judging other women and the perplexing overconfidence of chino-wearing middle-aged white men named Roger.

Did I Say That Out Loud? covers essential life skills (never buy an acrylic jumper, always decline the offer of a limoncello), ponders the prudence of orgasm merchandise and suggests the disconcerting possibility that Christmas is a hereditary disease, passed down the maternal line.

At a time of constant uncertainty, what we all need is the wisdom of two women who haven't got a clue what's going on either.

Critic reviews

"Joyous, wise, reassuring and laugh-out-loud funny. I love these two women so much." (Elizabeth Day)

"A book like no other. Honest and very, very funny. Some bits made me want to cheer—a sentence on parenting teenage girls was so good I may get it tattooed on myself, possibly in Hebrew." (Sara Cox)

Great Listening

Loved every chapter. So funny. Just like their Podcasts. Many subjects they chose reflected my own experiences and great to laugh with them too.

Nothing less than wonderful

If you enjoy Fortunately podcast you will love the wit, wisdom and warmth from Fi and Jane in this audible book Did I say that out loud? It’s a chemistry you wish you were part of it, and by listening you genuinely are for a few hours. I’ve listened once and will listen again and probably again. A series of essays on life- it’s ups, downs and what they’ve learnt along the way all with their delightful perspective and humour. It’s warm and wonderful and a perfect prescription for all of us. I loved it. Thank you ladies and don’t wait for another pandemic to write another one.

It excellent. I laughed through it, it made me think about myself and who I am, and Fi has given me a new mantra to live by, thank you sister (as she would say).

Joyful

If you know and love the BBC podcast Fortunately, then you'll be right at home. I suspect that the audiobook is the superior version of this title, as Fi and Jane have such wonderful voices and the interplay between them underpins the essays here.

Just wonderful

Perceptive, insightful and all observations resonate deeply with this and, I suspect, most listeners. A compelling mix of wit and wisdom. Thank you!

I too saw Blondie at Deeside Leisure Centre

Well, I have something in common with the great Jane Garvey because I too went to see Blondie at the Deeside Leisure Centre. This is a refreshingly open and honest stroll through many of late 20th and early 21st century life’s foibles, fads and fanaticisms. I loved it

Absolutely brilliant!

As always with these two national treasures of ‘audio ‘, Fi and Jane have written and read, I listened on Audible, a book full of real life. It’s funny; memory jogging; interesting; balanced; and honest. The writing is brilliant. I’m going to start at the first episode of Fortunately and listen to it all over again!
