Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Die Trying is the second book in Lee Child’s internationally popular Jack Reacher series, read by Jeff Harding.

Jack Reacher, alone, strolling nowhere.

A Chicago street in bright sunshine. A young woman, struggling on crutches. Reacher offers her a steadying arm.

And turns to see a handgun aimed at his stomach.

Chained in a dark van racing across America, Reacher doesn't know why they've been kidnapped. The woman claims to be FBI. She's certainly tough enough. But at their remote destination, will raw courage be enough to overcome the hopeless odds?

Although the Jack Reacher novels can be listened to in any order, Die Trying is the second in the series.

Seriously, Give It Any Rating You Want!

This is a book you could give almost any rating you want, and be able to justify it! For me these older Reacher books are gold dust. When I first started juggling CDs into my car stereo at service stations upon discovering Audiobooks my initial diet was Rebus and Reacher. Superb, classics both of them!

Listening to the gloriously crunchy, gravelly tones of Jeff Harding doing this amazing Reacher character and bringing him to life was a complete wonder to me. It is exactly the voice I imagine the tough, aloof Reacher having even if the female characters don't fare quite so well.

Add to this Child's punchy, staccato writing style, the deep thought analysis of Reacher calculating situations and the excellent action sequences I can easily rate this five stars very happily. The sniper sequences in his books I've always enjoyed and in Die Trying there is an absolute doozy.

On the other hand . . . the plot is bonkers. Really bonkers and if you put your plot hole pedant's hat on you will be like a pig in the proverbial rolling around for hours before you are finished. I can also well imagine some finding the narration a bit monotone even though I think it just fits perfectly.

So, choose your rating, I've gone for five stars based on the sheer exuberant enjoyment I've felt revisiting this, possibly fulled by a bit of nostalgia. Others will choose a variety of ratings but like it or loathe it you'll have plenty to say about Die Trying by the end.

Ridiculous plot

There are so many holes in this plot, it's hard to know where to begin! The kidnappers think nothing of killing the owner of the car they are stealing but don't kill Jack Reacher who just happens to get caught up in the kidnap! To them, he would have been even less important than the car owner and they would have killed him almost immediately.

Bad guys point guns at him countless times - but they never pull the trigger - despite slicing up FBI agents and their own gang members...

Also, it would be almost impossible to group shots with a Barrett rifle at 1000 yards without having first 'zeroed in' the scope with the shooter's eye. At least three practice shots would be required before that grouping could be achieved. Once zeroed in for one shooter, the gun would not shoot accurately for another, unless the eye characteristics were the same, which is extremely unlikely.

Also, why answer the radio when it becomes clear the bad guy only wants to use it to make his demands? If he can't make them, he has no lever.

The FBI agents and Military personnel came across as rank amateurs. Storming the bad guys' fortress in city suits and shoes with a hand gun and no back up? Really?

As for the kidnap victim also being the President's god-daughter - please...

Not a favourite

Enjoyed this romp of an adventure. Struggled at times with the narration style, in particular found 'He said / She said' very irritating.

He said, She said......

Great audiobook, but marred by over-frequent use of "He Said...She Said, etc." by the narrator. I am so distracted by this. It is difficult to enjoy as much as may have been.

Enjoyable and Captivating

Making my way through this series of books love that I can listen on any device, anywhere this is an amazing story and I love how Lee Childs does not beat about the bush just gets right into the story, I also like that each book is a separate story in its own right. I have put a couple of friends onto these books who have also been enjoying them so glad there is quite a few more to get through.

Male version of twilight?

Enjoyed it but made me cringe in some places. Also, I find this with other Lee Child books, but the story really started to die towards the middle and end.

Adolescent at Times

Well read, although the reader's characterisation of the only significant female voice became tiresome. A good story, though Reacher's he-man credentials stretched plausibility to the limit at times, and the too-detailed descriptions of guns and ballistics were for teenaged geeks only, and veered into comic-book territory. Started well but became a little tedious.
