About this listen
On a cold night in Australia, two construction workers driving along a deserted mountain road are gunned down inside their vehicle. The killings are fast. Efficient.
An assassination carried out with expert precision. The only witness to the crime is a man resting by the side of the road. Recently retired, he'd flown halfway across the world to escape his demons.
Ex-US black ops operative Jason King.
Quickly spotted, King is targeted by those in the shadows of a small country town, ruthless killers determined to tie up loose ends. They have no knowledge of the violent past they are about to revive....

The Reacher of Oz!
I think this could be an entertaining enough series but not one of those where I’ll be panting with anticipation over the release of each new book. There’s plenty of action, decent pacing and it’s all good fun action thriller popcorn. The parallels with Child’s Jack Reacher or Baldacci’s John Puller are easy to see with Jason King. A tough ex-military type who has left his career and now wanders near-aimlessly armed with his own unique moral code which defines justice in ever so slightly harsher tones than the law chooses to. So fans of Reacher and Puller will immediately feel at home here even transported as they will be halfway round the world to the Australian Outback.
That said, I don’t think that Matt Rogers reaches the same heights as either Baldacci or Child. In some ways this reminded me of how Tom Cruise applied Hollywood to Jack Reacher dumbing him down and changing Reacher from something unique into just another Tinsel Town action figure. Even as a fan of these types of books the plot and how some of the key bad guys behaved had me wincing in places. The other characters that King meet also seem to go from natural distrust of a tough-looking stranger to near relatives in the blink of an eye.
The narration by Roger Wayne is thoroughly decent though he doesn’t have the Aussie accents so don’t expect the locals to sound particularly authentic. That aside he carries the story well and is clear and easy to listen to. So, if you are after an easy to read, quick moving action thriller or want to get some more Reacher-like entertainment this may well serve. I don’t think it is as good but I still found it fairly easy-listening.

unbelievable
The hero in this book is indestructible. The plot is really all too unbelievable. Can't recommend.
