Summary

A must-have Spider Shepherd thriller.

The target—The Prime Minister. The assassins—hard-bitten jihadists with nothing to lose.

The only man who can stop them? Dan 'Spider' Shepherd.

But Shepherd's reputation is also on the line—he helped get one of the jihadists into the UK during the final days of the War in Afghanistan.

Now he has to track down the man whose life he once saved.

But the assassins aren't lone-wolf killers—someone much more devious is pulling their strings.

And the clock is ticking....

This is a second listen book

There is no doubting that Paul Thornley is a good narrator, he does narrate other characters I listen to which I struggle with sometimes, but he really carries a story well.
As for the story it was nice to have more enemies of the country included (not a statement you think you would make), but recent books have focused around the one.
It was also nice that it was so on point with everything that we know is happening currently, though the PM isn't named so some hedge betting going on.
Spider, one of my favourite characters in all books, doesn't let us down, he gets the job done, is a team player and doesn't have an ego as big as some books heroes. But he seems to have had a promotion, well deserved.
I enjoyed this book, I'm not sure Tony Blair would feel the same, but hey ho.
And for Spider fans the man with the tassel loafers is back, but his loafers aren't mentioned.

Good but predictable

It’s another Spider Shepherd beats the jihadists tale albeit this time with a Russian influence. A lot of references to the current political situation across the world with the Ukraine invasion being referenced multiple times makes the story very realistic. However, we know what’s going to happen, Spider saves the day and eliminates the threat. Maybe it’s time for some different influences or different criminal groups to be tackled as the jihadist angle is very well trodden now.

As ever, the book is always worth listening to with Paul on vocals. Brilliant talent.

As good as most Spider Shepherd books

Listened on audio Paul Thornton does a very good job narrating
No private life on Spider such as letting us know how Liam is getting on is a little disappointing

Dirty War

Another fantastic story from Stephen Leather. As always, set in the current climate and goes into details that many may not even think about. This provoking of thought is one of the many reasons I love Stephen's books. The attention to detail is staggering and fits perfectly with Spider's memory.
Paul Thornley's performance in narrating the story for audio is spot-on. I find Paul easy to listen to and he just fits.
Thanks!
