Summary

Dr Siri Paiboun may be in his 73rd year, but he’s still as sturdy as a jungle boar – and as crafty as one. Reluctant coroner to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, he’s been despatched to the country’s mountainous north, where the sudden appearance of a mummified arm protruding from a concrete path laid in front of the president’s new mansion has caused an understandable degree of embarrassment.

Dr Siri’s disinterment and autopsy of the body attached to the arm provide some grisly surprises, but it is his gifts as a shaman that put the septuagenarian doctor on the trail of the killer. As Siri and his team close in, they must tackle a marriage proposal, brave the perils of the life on the open road, and come face-to-face with a horrific sacrificial ritual.

Is it any wonder Dr Siri takes up disco dancing?

Addictive reading

Another Colin Cotterill book which was very hard to put down. I found it addictive reading. Plenty of subtle humour throughout making the story most enjoyable to read. Cotterill has a straight forward flowing style of writing which easily paints a full and vivid picture in the minds eye. The book was narrated by Nigel Anthony who brought the characters to life with his superbly animated reading style.

another enjoyable story.

Any additional comments?

dr siri and nurse is sent north to investigate an arm found protruding out of the cement. mr. gunn(not sure of the spelling) promises to look after the mortuary whilst they are gone. it is this which had me hoping everything would turn out well.
I enjoyed this story of murder, spirits, determination, humour and look forward to the next in the series.
nigel anathony performed the story very well as he has done the previous books bringing the characters to life, making this an enjoyable listen.

Too supernatural for me

I really like all these characters, and the strong sense of time and place in this series. However, the plots have started to tip too far into the supernatural for my tastes, so this will be my final read in the series :(
