Summary

Exclusively from Audible

Doctor Thorne is the third audiobook in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes and Greshambury estate. Despite the promptings of his family to consider a Miss Dunstable, heiress to a fortune, Frank's affections persist, and the humane Doctor Thorne, as Mary's protector, must confront the prejudices of the mid-Victorian society.

Timothy West's narration enhances all the wit and satire that one expects from Trollope. Full of snobbery and hypocrisy, it is a social comedy full of some of Trollope's most brilliant characters.

Critic reviews

" Doctor Thorne is engaging, witty, profoundly moving, and full of emotional strands that seem as relevant today as when it was written. I love it." (Julian Fellowes)

The definitive Trollope!

What a pleasure! This reading is every bit as wonderful as I remembered - far superior to the two other unabridged Barchester versions I am aware of. Please, please can we have the rest? Timothy West does everyone from the slimy Slope to the shirty Archdeacon with enormous humour and understanding but without falling into parody (which soon becomes tedious).

I remember vividly how he did the babytalk in the main chronicle, Barchester Towers - completely convincing, somehow very feminine, very delightful and silly - can't wait to hear it again. And Lily Dale, and a host of other characters. What a genius the man is, worthy of Trollope himself! Bring him on....

Timothy West. He’s the best.

I don’t usually write reviews. I only write them when I want to thank the author. Since the author is dead I can’t thank him, but I can thank Timothy West. I don’t know how he does it but he does. Hear for yourself.

Brilliant story made even better by Timothy West

Trollope's humour is fabulous but I would have missed a lot of it if it hadn't been for Timothy West's rendition.

Lovely!

What an enjoyable book! A little slow in places but overall the story, and the narration by the wonderful Timothy West, was brilliant.

Wonderful!

Love, snobbery, humanity, humour, jealousy, friendship, ambition, family, class, illegitimacy…

A perfect blend of life in the upper and middle classes of a Victorian world.

A few unnecessary embellishments, but fewer than in Barsetshire Towers, and I was very much absorbed from early on. I enjoyed how the story focussed on different characters to the previous novels, but that some of those played cameo roles in Dr Thorne’s story.

Onto the next!

A tale of privilege overtaken by love

Timothy West’s reading is flawless . He inhabits every character as though he was all of these people. Anthony Trollope would be applauding!
A “must read” for lovers of 19th Century literature and a captivating story of Love which both travels through real time and remains relevant for all time.

Wonderful

What a lovely warm hearted witty and entertaining story - Timothy West’s performance is one of the best I’ve heard on audio book - he brings it to life and injects extra humour into the wit of the words through his dry delivery, so I often laughed out loud. I’m sad it’s over.

Possibly my favourite Trollope so far

Timothy West and Anthony Trollope are such a perfect combination and this story is a particularly brilliant mix of moral dilemmas, hierarchical obstacles and human tenderness. And humour.
