About this listen

David Troughton reads this gripping adventure by award-winning author Stephen Baxter, featuring the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe.

The Wheel. A ring of ice and steel turning around a moon of Saturn, and home to a mining colony supplying a resource-hungry Earth.

It's a bad place to grow up. The colony has been plagued by problems. Maybe it's just gremlins, just bad luck. But the equipment failures and thefts of resources have been increasing, and there have been stories among the children of mysterious creatures glimpsed aboard the Wheel. Many of the younger workers refuse to go down the warren-like mines anymore.

And then sixteen-year-old Phee Laws, surfing Saturn's rings, saves an enigmatic blue box from destruction. Aboard the Wheel, the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe find a critical situation - and they are suspected by some as the source of the sabotage. They soon find themselves caught in a mystery that goes right back to the creation of the solar system. A mystery that could kill them all.

Like a lost episode from the Patrick Troughton era

This is great - reads like some lost episode from Patrick Troughton’s Second Doctor era, and retains much of the late 60s vision of the future - in this case one where a group of (mostly Scottish) colonists/miners have a space station near Saturn.

The best Doctor Who books / audios are the lengthier novels and this fits into that category. If you’re an older Who fan who remembers the Troughton era, you’ll love it. Same applies if you’re a younger fan keen to know more about the classic (much better) Who days.

It is made even better by Patrick Troughton’s son David reading it, as he sounds EXACTLY like his father.

Recommended, and has a nice book cover design too.

As good as The Dominators

very slow story. Didn't feel like a 2nd doctor Adventure. The characterisation missed the mark and was completely lacking the warmth and humour of the Troughton area. I was very disappointed.
