About this listen
Don't fear the walking dead. Dominate them.
Yasmine Alvarado has a secret life and a haunted past. A single mother living in the remote mountain community of Sparrowdale, Colorado, Yasmine is a survivor. Having escaped a sadistic, psychopathic husband, she now secretly moonlights as a private dominatrix while raising her teenage daughter, Charlie.
But, when a mysterious, horrifying plague is unleashed, turning countless people into ravenous, undead monsters, Yasmine's dungeon turns deadly. All alone, with the world crumbling all around her, Yasmine will have to confront her deepest, darkest nightmares, and risk everything to save her daughter. Will she be able to survive the onslaught of the dead?
Dom of the Dead is a thrilling, dramatic, post-apocalyptic story, a stand-alone novella set in Nic Roads' upcoming Zombie Vale series.
Note: This audiobook contains violence, mature situations, and adult language.

A Punchy Little Novella
There's an awful lot of white noise in the zompoc genre when it comes to indie publishing. I've dropped so many just reading a sample because they clearly lacked the power to show, and just told a story. Limited descriptiions with thin and repetitive vocabulary, many I've tried have two dimensional cardboard characters and it puts me off reading in the genre a lot of the time. The truly talented indie authors can often get swallowed up in the noise of all those who like the idea of being an author, but just don't want to do the work and throw out any old trash and expect people to blindly praise it.
Nic is NOT one of those. His use of language is robust and varied, and writes in a way that instead of telling you how someone dies, he wants to splash their blood on your face with expansive description that isn't just gore for the sake of it. Yasmine has actual personality, motivations, and emotions that I'd expect from a main character... someone you can genuinely root for, especially as a parent.
I'm certain Nic will only get better as he goes on with his Zombie Vale series, and I look forward to seeing that. I know from his active social media presence that he really does "do the work" and it shows in his writing. A really promising start, and I wish Nic all the success.
A quick note.... I wasn't sure on the narrator to begin with. I thought she might be too breathy in her delivery and overly dramatic, but no.... that thought soon goes away when she gets into the character and story. In the end she gave a great performance so I've 5-starred every section.

Give me MORE!!!
I absolutely loved this novella, my only complaint with this is there wasn't more. Yasmine had already been through so much being a single mom after escaping her abusive husband then the zombies show up to throw another monkey wrench in her life. Now she has to face all her fears to get to and save her daughter Charlie along with saving herself. If you're into zombies and smart, sassy and independent heroines then this is definitely a book for you.

Everything I knew it was and more...!
I was fortunate to be able to read Dom of the Dead some time ago, and being a massive audiobook fan (it's how I chew through most of my literature learning....see what I did there!) I was delighted to hear the news that Dom would be given a voice. Alyssa was fantastic, and her voice suited the character perfectly. She has a perfect blend of dainty and dominance to her tone, and I really hope to hear more of her voice in future Zombie Vale works.
As for the story itself, well, I already knew this was top notch, and this version was just the icing on the cake for me. I've been waiting patiently for months now to learn more of the happenings in and around Sparrowdale, so get your butt moving and get more churned out ASAP!
A great entrance to the world that is audiobooks, and only more good can come from it.
Give this a shot if you like anything zombie related, it's the right length, the right amount of serious to fun ratio, and just a drop in the water of what's to come down the line.
Great stuff...and now I wait...again!

Don't be out off by the title
I nearly was, a man writing about a dominatrix! I thought sounds a bit dodgy but no,I liked the character.Well written zombie read,a clever little taster of hopefully what is to come in the Zombie vale series mentioned at the end of the book
