About this listen

Trapped in bumper-to-bumper traffic, Lilian is caught up in a maelstrom of death when the outbreak hits Johannesburg...a city numbering in the millions.

With no one to rely on but herself, she has to find a way off the bloody streets before it's too late. But with a six-month-old baby and a hysterical toddler in tow, escape seems unlikely.

Battered and abused, Maria looks back upon her life with husband Rolf with loathing. Caught in a prison from which she cannot escape, she's powerless to change her destiny and forever bound to a man she hates. Until the virus grants her an unexpected chance at revenge.

All it takes is one mistake. As the sun sets against the backdrop of the African veldt and living nightmares walk the streets in the shape of their loved one's bodies, humanity's last hope rests in the hands of ordinary men and women called to do extraordinary things.

Survive Another Day is the prequel to Last Another Day, book one of the Dangerous Days series. It delivers eight nerve-wracking stories that will show you how it all began.

Quite liked this.

I thought these short stories were interesting and a good introduction to the series that follows. I could have done without some of the graphic descriptions of physical violence, but the events themselves were quite exciting. My favourite story was the one with the children in the field - there was a real sense of peril.

I will listen to the next in the series.

Great collection of stories with a great narrator!

I thought this was excellent. This is exactly what I want from a zombie story, its epic, tragic, sad, theres fear and desperation and noone is safe.
The narrator was fantastic (whether his accent was perfect or not) he made me feel like I was listening to different people and separates the narration from the speech very well. I cant wait to check out the following books.

Good ol' zombie thriller

Survive Another Day, by Baileigh Higgins, is a collection of eight zombie thriller stories chronicling the beginning of the zombie outbreak in South Africa.

In terms of thrill and gore, this one ticks all the boxes. It's ominous, fast, and gives you everything you'd expect from a good ol' zom-horror.

On the flip side of that, don't expect anything particularly unique from the plot or characters. Some of the characters felt a little 2D, nothing jarring though, and if you're just looking for a quick thriller then I'd definitely recommend this.

Mercifully short

This wants to be a World War Z but falls far short of the mark. Some of the protagonists had me rooting for the zombies, though this might have been deliberate. I always thought the majority of the SA population were PoC, but two thirds of the characters in this book seemed to be Russian ex-pats.

Really good

Enjoyed this freebie from audible. Usual zombie stuff but each tale is a story about an individual and I liked Henry best.

enjoyed this.

Good collection that gives you a little extra sneak into some of the characters. I unfortunately listened to this one before the other so spoiled some bits for myself but still enjoyed it.

Ag shame! Terrible Accents!

I like zombie stories. I listen to them all the time. Finding a zombie story set in South Africa got me really excited.

The story was okay as far as zombie stories go but the accents were terrible. Part Australian, part middle east, maybe Moroccan - nothing from sub Saharan Africa.

The criticism is aimed more at the production house than the narrator - who was good enough in his native accent.

The South African accent is rich, diverse, and difficult to imitate. The terrible accents ruined the story for me. Please get South Africans to play South African roles.

Ruined by the narrator

If the narrator can't do a South African accent then he should really rather just stick with his natural accent. This sounded like a natural American "English" speaker trying to do a hybrid Russian / Australian / Scottish psycho who forgets occasionally and then a bit of American comes through. It was really cringe-worthy. In all my many years as an Audible fan I have never come across any narration as poorly researched and executed as this, not even Jeff Harding's performances (when he sounds like he's reading his shopping list) are this bad.
