Great performance

A quirky story. The narrator is excellent. If you have enjoyed other Graham Greene novels, I think you should also enjoy this one.

Despicable Dr Fischer.

A well written and interesting short novel about being human and very wealthy, and how greed can alter your personality and decision making. Brilliantly narrated by Julian Wadham, who brings a sensitivity to the characters and circumstances.

Excellent Narration, brilliant book

Julian Wadham was perfect for this strange but brilliant Graham Greene novel. Greed, love , hate and power all rolled up in this little book.

Very enjoyable

It's a pity Greene didn't do murder mysteries - this novel has all the ingredients of one. A circle of bizarre characters, a hated central figure, a stand alone rebel, a man with a long standing grudge and two blighted love affairs. It's well-written, well-paced and beautifully read. The ending was a little weak maybe but overall well worth a read.

A perfect book

It was a real treat to have this book read so beautifully. I often have to stop listening to audible books< because the readers drive me nuts. The story is extremely well written, concise, spare and gripping. It is almost accompanied by spooky music and nods it's hat to Tales of the Unexpected. I loved it and would highly recommend it

Dank and Defeatist

Bought this as a first edition hardback decades ago. Thought I was being very smart etc for having done so, I'm older, much, now than when I bought the book. I wasn't sure what the point was when I read the book, now I'm still uncertain. If I was supposed to believe/accept that all those awful people were awful simply because they went to all those parties to be humiliated in the hope of a mention in the will, well yes, I did believe all that. Did I need the droopy anti-hero to come to that conclusion? No, I didn't. He's got no less droopy with the passing of the years. Was I supposed to dislike everyone including the droopy anti-hero? No idea, but I did and do. The reading is very well executed, I found and find the story exasperatingly gloomy and depressing - contact with large amounts of money is a bad thing? At some point everybody has to sit down at The Bomb Party and be served up endless quantities of Rice Pudding - ghastly muck in my opinion and apparently Graham Greene's as well - it's fortunately a very short book.
