About this listen
A legend from the past is a kingdom's only hope....
Cora knows her grandmother's stories of the noble dragon riders by heart, even though most people consider them just a myth. But for Cora, the legends are a pleasant distraction from her concern for her ailing father and the enormous debt they owe to the king's garrison.
Desperate to help her father, Cora becomes a scale scavenger, risking life and limb by entering the territory of the deadly, feral dragons to gather the highly valuable scales. But her first attempt nearly ends in tragedy when she’s trapped by an angry dragon. They are both stunned when she unlocks the secret of communicating with him.
As Cora and the dragon, Alaric, grow closer, they uncover more secrets from the kingdom’s past. There was a dark conclusion to the dragon rider legacy, brought about by a malicious force that sought power at any cost. That force still holds the kingdom in thrall—and has no intention of allowing the dragon riders to rise again.
Can Cora and Alaric reignite a legend from the past, before it’s too late?

I really liked Cora and her dragon's story and how they belong together and how she becomes a dragon rider.

I can't wait for my 10 year old to listen to this
This is the 32rd book I have read/listened to by this author and I seriously grab any book of hers to listen to. She is my favorite dragon story writer. I love that many of her books are gentle enough for my ten year old to listen to.
This book may seem a slow build to some, but I enjoy the character relationships, budding friendships and bonds and subtle revealing of the reality of the situation the people are in. How did people believe dragons riders were a myth - how did humans and dragons used to communicate - what are the scales being collected for? Cora is a girl with a simple desire and i like how everything she does even as she learns more about the dragons, still does not stray far from that- all she wants is to help her father.
This is the 5th book I have listened to by this narrator ( Amy Hall ). I listened to another series she narrated and found her narration occasionally stilted. I also noticed there was some issues with the writing, and now listening to her read this lets me know she did her best with what she had. I did not notice those same issues in this series. Amy does well with different voices and lets me immerse myself in the story- which is not hard to do with this writer. She does not try to go beyond what seems natural to her to voice the dragons. She does not really use accents to differentiate characters, instead relying on tone and cadence.
There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive / overly descriptive violence, or swearing.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review.
