About this listen
The culmination of Jane Austen's genius, a sparkling comedy of love and marriage.
Beautiful, clever, rich and single Emma Woodhouse is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage. Nothing, however, delights her more than interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protegee Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected. With its imperfect but charming heroine and its witty and subtle exploration of relationships, Emma is often seen as Jane Austen's most flawless work.

Mrs Van Dyke shoes us hoo to due an English accent
Actually a pretty good reading of this deservedly well loved Austin novel. However, some of the attempted "English" pronunciation was a bit snigger-inducing. Anyway, I enjoyed it, the reader brought the characters to life convincingly with humour and good pace.

An old-fashioned story with unusual narration
I bought this audiobook as a study aid for my daughter who was reading the novel at school. It proved useful, but is not a particularly easy listen as the narrator sounds very robotic.

Poor Recording
I was tempted into buying this version because Beth Kesler's voice sounded particularly clear in the sample.
By the time I got to chapter 5 I regretted my choice. Beth Kesler does NOT give a good performance, her characters' voices, particularly the male ones are stilted and un-natural and I found it distracting from the story. Occasionally she let's a bit of American accent slip in!
The technical quality of the recording is also poor. There are rough edits where sentences have presumably been re-recorded, and there is a general "rattley" quality to the sound.
I abandoned this version and purchased the Juliet Stevenson version instead, (so now I own two recordings). I can confirm that the Juliet Stevenson recording is much better in every respect.
