Summary

The continuing story of Arthur, the second in a trilogy that began with The Winter King. The novels bring Arthur and his world to vivid life.

Arthur is a man battling for his vision of the future in a brutal age, dragged down by suspicions and magics of the past, surrounded by intrigue, dependent on his skill at war and genius for leadership.

Excellent

I take back my last review of the first audio book of this trilogy. Tim Pigott- Smith's performance is excellent. A compelling story teller and what a story...

Great book

I normally choose unabridged titles but in this case I made an exception and I'm so glad I did! Tim Pigott-Smith's reading is brilliant; the rendintion of various accents and character deliniation are spot on. Bernard Cornwell creates a world that you want to believe in and peoples it with characters you can really care about or really hate depending on who we are taking about. This wonderful story is the second of the trillogy starting with the Winter King and ending with Excalibur. I would recomend you listen to them in order as you really do need to know the characters stories from the begining.

better than when i read it.

read when i was 13, even better this time around. great narrating with fantastic pace. the story is as good as i remember...if not better.

it was nice hearing the propper pronunciation of all the Galic words and realising how wrong i'd been all those years ago.

The Arthurian legend given substance

I had the trilogy as books and as tapes. This is the first time I have seen them as audio books to download and I have been looking for them for several years.

The three titles, The Winter King, The Enemy of God, and Excalibur, are my favourite and the best retelling of the legend of Arthur I have read or heard, filled with action and interesting facts about the era, real locations and a gritty realism. I loved them and will enjoy listening to them again.....and again..

still a fantastic story

It is a shame that these particular recordings are not the complete and unabridged version of the audio books, otherwise, it would have been 5 stars.

Can't fault the performance.
The books was written with love.

outstanding from the master of this style writing,

What made the experience of listening to Enemy of God the most enjoyable?

Just a really great take on the whole
Arthur legend , cleverly crafted all that you would want from a book of this type. The story is really strong with all the characters very well written, you are there , and you want this to be the real story not just a myth. Get the whole series you will not be disappointed, then just enjoy, don't know why this was not made into a TV series rather then the up and coming Last kingdom , although that is also very good this has definitely got the edge on that series, the story is so well crafted battles, magic that may or not be magic, and really rich developed characters with a strong story line, so as you may now be aware I really liked it

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dervil as he is the main character and drives the whole story, you really warm to him he is brave,he takes risks,he's loyal and along with that he's kind
!

Which character – as performed by Tim Pigott-Smith – was your favourite?

Merlin

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The opening part with Remembering The Dead And The Battle At Lug Vale

Any additional comments?

Please try this, its great in fact the whole series is outstanding, but should be listened to in the correct order winter king first

Great book

Tim piggott Smith is by far the best narrator for Bernard Cornwell, shame the book is abridged. Matt bates is also good, with Cornwell.
A fantastic listen,had me hooked
