Summary

Fame and popularity breed envy in high places, and the adulation of the mob is fickle. They often take as much pleasure in tearing down the idols that they have grown tired of as they did in elevating them in the first place. It is safer by far to live unseen and unremarked, as I always attempt to do.

An ancient kingdom. An incredible destiny.

Taita is a humble slave, an expert in art, poetry, medicine and engineering as well as keeping important secrets. He is the most treasured possession of Lord Intef. Yet when Intef's beautiful daughter, Lostris, is married to the Pharaoh, Taita is commanded to follow her and swiftly finds himself deeper than he ever could have imagined in a world of deception and treachery.

But outside the palace, the great kingdom of Egypt is divided and in even greater danger. Enemies threaten on all sides, and only Taita holds the power to save them all....

The first audiobook in the epic Egyptian Series.

ALL ONE CHAPTER

I have read this hardback book several times and it was good to get in on audible. Mark meadows does the story justice and he keeps an even pace throughout with some good voices. I enjoyed listening to it. My only complaint is that the main recording is in one big chapter. This was problematic when transferring devices eg phone watch iPad. To pick up where it had left off on,other devices which meant searching through the time sequence to get to where I had left the story. It would have been much better if the chapters were broken down as the written word . Wilbur smith 4 books are all 20 plus hours having to trawl through hours listening detracts from the experience to get back into the story. Library chapters would be a better recording

History or fiction?

Maybe a bit of both. if not it could have been based on real events. Maybe I should read the credits again. Either way, I enjoyed it.

Ancient Egypt comes alive!

Wilbur Smith has an incredible ability to breathe life into the Countries he writes about and this historical story of Ancient Egypt [including Africa and the Middle East] is by no means an exception! I have thoroughly enjoyed this read and can only look forward to reading Book 2. Mark Meadows should be congratulated for his performance! I am aware that the Narrator has quite a task to perform, while capturing the essence of story telling, they also need to make sure the book doesn't become flat and lose fluidity and Mark did it beautifully!

Intoxicating

An epic tale with fantastic narration. Took a while to get used to Mark Meadows' style but he brought the characters to life beautifully. The story is intricate, delicately weaved and offers numerous delights. As a fellow South African I should have discovered his books long ago but alas it took me a while but I'm happy I finally did. I can't wait to get my next book downloaded for hours of lietening pleasure

Not a good Narrator! I was Wrong!

I bought this from Audible many years ago and fully enjoyed a well-read listen. The then narrator brought the characters and background to colourful life - this narrator does not have the tone or imagery for this story. Why has Audible/Amazon changed the narrators on quite a lot of the long-time tales?

Why change when the original was so good?

My humblest apologies to Mark Meadows. When I first started listening to this version of River God I was disappointed that the narrator was different. I stopped listening with some irritation! I then read other reviews of Mark's work and was surprised to understand that he was held in high regard. I started to listen again and to my great pleasure I was really enjoying the narration! I have now finished River God and am now listening to The Seventh Scroll again and continuing with real enjoyment. Thank goodness I decided to give it another go.

Tihita was just to perfect

It spoilt the story that Tihita was the best at everything his friends where the most fearsome and beautiful, no one is that perfect.
However on a good note it did have some gripping moments. I have bought the series, so just hope the next two are better.

Incredible Storytelling

Wilbur Smith has the rare skill to transport his readers to a different place , thousands of years ago with rich descriptions . His Egyptian hero , Taita is someone you will grow to love while the evil of the villain will leave you desperate for revenge. Highly recommended. Incredible story

one of my all time favourites

I have read this book no less than 6 times and listening to it proved to be just case good. the beauty and magesty portrayed by Smith is without equal. this epic novel, like the pyramids, stands the test of time. Meadows brings my characters alive and does not disappoint. I will never grow tired of this book.
