About this listen
Sprung from the roots of '70s hard rock, Metallica defined the look and sound of 1980s heavy metal, just as Led Zeppelin had for hard rock and the Sex Pistols for punk before them. Inventors of thrash metal - Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth followed - it was always Metallica who led the way, who pushed to another level, who became the last of the superstar rockers.
Though plagued by adversities, including the death of their bassist in a bus crash, infighting and substance abuse, they survived to became the biggest-selling band in the world. With 100 million records sold worldwide, their music has extended its reach beyond rock and metal, and into the pop mainstream, as they went from speed metal to MTV with their hit single "Enter Sandman". Until now there hasn't been a critical, authoritative, in-depth portrait of the band. Mick Wall's thoroughly researched, insightful work is enriched by his interviews with band members, record company execs, roadies, and fellow musicians. He tells the story of how a tennis-playing, music-loving Danish immigrant named Lars Ulrich created a band with singer James Hetfield and made his dreams a reality. Enter Night delves into the various incarnations of the band, and the personalities of all key members, past and present - especially Ulrich and Hetfield - to produce the definitive word on the biggest metal band on the planet

Dreadful narration
This was a quite an enjoyable book, but the English narrator's American accent was woeful. He sounded like he was dubbing a 1980s Kung Fu film.

Book you always wanted to read
Growing in post communist country during 90’s Metallica was always more than just a music for us. It was an institution heralding our new found freedom. It all started back in Communist days when Metallica cassette tapes were smuggled from the West and when Iron Curtain finally collapsed and USSR with it Metallica sound right there with us. No matter how small town or village you have been. Metallica was symbol and when Black Album came it was prelude to 90’s and what came next. So thanks for this amazing book I really enjoyed that,

A history or a moan?
The Metallica autobiography written by someone who sounds like he doesn't like them.
There are a few slips on facts and bypasses a lot of the good stuff the band has achieved. Instead it focuses on being highly critical of the band and their personality, and I feel plays too much on the negatives to the point of over playing them.

Awful narration although a must read rather than listen for younger fans
Okay, I used to be a massive Metallica fanboy. Even meeting them at shades records. Saw them from ride the lightning -hardwired tours. I am from the nwobhm era and admired Metallica" giving it to the man ". Now they are the Metallica inc./corp .This book does tell some things that I never knew back in the day. A few things missed out also..
James and Lars just become more unlikeable the more you discover about them .
As mentioned, the narration is dreadful . None is pronounced non . Voodoo chile is pronounced chilly ! The voice is monotonous, switching from artsy English reading to poor American and danish impressions . The English language is increasingly being dumbed down enough, but this book is painful to listen to.
If you are already familiar with the bands history , avoid ! You're not missing out ..
