About this listen

Sequel to the award-winning More Ketchup Than Salsa: Confessions of a Tenerife Barman.

A must-have reality check for anybody who has ever pondered a move to sunnier climes.

If the first six months of running the Smugglers Tavern had been a baptism of fire, the subsequent years were about as much fun as bobbing for apples in a vat of acid.

Having swapped the tin roof of a cold British fish market for the sunny skies of a Spanish holiday island, Joe and Joy succeeded in thwarting the first wave of attacks from bungling bureaucrats, bewildered holidaymakers, and their own spectacular ineptitude.

What they didn't realize was that their enemies were regrouping. Not only that, but those enemies had made camp a lot closer to home, enemies that would make their encounters with the exploding gas bottles, East European squatters, and big-time Charlies featured in the first book, More Ketchup Than Salsa, seem like chapters from Enid Blyton.

The trials and tribulations of attempting to make a better life abroad continue...with disastrous consequences.

Even more entertaining than Joe's last book

I have just come back from a 6 hour round trip for work and had the pleasure of listening to this audiobook. You do need to listen to the first one however to get full enjoyment. The first book was much more centred around the characters that frequented the Smugglers Tavern but this one goes into greater details about the protaganists own life and feelings, with some suprising and touching life moments thrown in.

The narrator is excellent and speaks in a great Northern accent.

Funnily enough we are looking to book our Summer Holiday soon and I have a feeling that we'll end up at El Beryl!

Wondeful - and so very true!!

Anyone who has lived in Tenerife will appreciate this well crafted book - the narration is superb and it captures the feelings, frustrations and emotions that are undoubtedly generated by living on 'The Rock'. The sorry telling is spell-binding - I'm presuming names have been changed but overall the accuracy of the way in which 'Brits abroad' is portrayed is hypnotic. This is a great book - narrated by a superb storyteller and I can't wait for the next story to be told by the author.

An authentic and funny listen

Enjoyed this and the previous book....very down to earth, relatable and funny. only just managed to warm to the readers accent by the end of this second book. Otherwise 10 out of 10

Have read more in the series and enjoyed listening for a change. Having owned a bar myself albeit in Mainland Spain alot of Joe and Joy's life made me smile with memories of my own times back then. Thanks Joe

really enjoyed

loved this book, so many people can relate to the story here. Many have dreamt of being bar owner in the sunshine. A lot will like us be saying thank goodness we didn't go there after Joe's story. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am a Tenerife swallow that is no longer tempted to be a barkeep and would love to read about what Joe did next.

Fantastic

Wonderful book brilliantly read in a raw down to earth believable manner. Lots of laugh out loud moments interspersed with moments of sadness and despair. A real rollercoaster of a ride through the experience of running a bar in Tenerife - loved it!

Disappointed

I really enjoyed the first book by Joe Cawley, but this one was not particularly amusing and felt very much like a money making exercise.
