Summary

Lily Valance wants to forget the war. She's determined to enjoy the world of the 1920s, with its music, singing, laughter and pleasure.

When she meets Captain Stephen Winters, a decorated hero back from the Front, she's drawn to his wealth and status. In Lily he sees his salvation – from the past, from the nightmare, from the guilt at surviving the Flanders plains where so many were lost. But it's a dream that cannot last. Lily has no intention of leaving her singing career.

The hidden tensions of the respectable facade of the Winters household come to a head. Stephen's nightmares merge ever closer with reality and the truth of what took place in the mud and darkness brings him and all who loves him to a terrible reckoning ...

Brilliantly written and narrated.

Another brilliant story from Philippa Gregory and Bianco Amato deserves praise too for her excellent performance!
It was a ‘can’t put it down’ story and my only complaint is that it didn’t go on longer!! I would have liked an epilogue to let me hear what happened to the other main characters in the story, but it’s good for my imagination to create my own ‘ending’ beyond the very exciting climax where Philippa left us!!

Keep writing long stories please Ms Gregory!!

Absolutely Wonderful

My first Philipa Gregory book and won’t be my last. I love the way she writes with such passion and detail, each character stands out on his own with depth and individuality. I couldn’t put this novel down and read it in 3 days. Highly recommended.

Setting the scene

What a brilliant piece of work! It gives a picture of the struggles of post WWI not just the veterans but people, families and the cultural struggle of what was normal in society before and then after. The detail that paints the picture is brilliantly done.

Poignant and troubling

Beautifully told and a gripping story. Not a predictable plot and really felt like you were there. Couldn’t stop listening!

Did not enjoy!

I start by saying I love Philippa Gregory. She's never written a bad book as far as I'm concerned. Until now. The plot was truly miserable, didn't seem to go anywhere and I found it really hard work to plough through.

Absolutely gutted as this gifted author is usually first rate. I would not recommend this book.
