About this listen

It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends.

It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up...

Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds.

In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

Laying bare the comfortable conventions of rural England, this spine-tingling story pulses with suspense until the whiplash double-twist of the denouement.

An absolute treat.

Philippa Gregory never disappoints. I admire her writing so much. Always light and clever - she explores & conveys such complex human experiences without ever feeling heavy. And Alix Dunmore read this dark tale in such a beautiful, soothing voice. I soon found any excuse to plug in and listen!

Just Brilliant!

I read this book many years ago and I absolutely adored it, I was delighted to see it on Audible and oh my, the narrator is a complete joy to listen to, she’s really outstanding. As a previous reviewer said, it really is wonderfully frustrating, it’s a real comfort read too, it’s just so over the top with the Britishness and I just love it! One of those rare books I could listen to again and again!

Wonderful Story!

I really enjoyed this novel! Ms Gregory is a great historical novelist but this tale of a 20th century British woman with the unexpected twist at the end kept me enthralled!

Not a usual Gregory but brilliant nonetheless

Wasn’t sure whether I would like this book or not. I have read all of Philippa Gregory’s novels and have loved them. However, this is a different take as it’s set in the present day.

I needn’t have worried as I was hooked almost immediately and did a two day read finishing at 3am this morning. It should carry a health warning as I was just unable to sleep until I had reached the finale and it didn't disappoint. But no spoilers here, read it for yourself.

Is there a genre that Philippa Gregory can’t accomplish? I suspect not!

Frustrating until the end 😂

The hero of the story was annoying. She redeems herself, but not until the very very end.

Excellent story telling.

This was a really enjoyable listen from one of my favourite authors. Well drawn characters on a believable story of the damage that parents can do to their children and so adversely affect their children's ability tosture into responsible adults.A cracking story. Also well read with believable characterisation.

Clever story and plot

This is very different from Phillipa
Gregory’s usual historical novels. I read it some years again and remembered how I enjoyed the book and I really enjoyed the audible version.

The Little House

One of the very few books that I read more than once. I don’t know what caught me about this story but I love how my sympathy isn’t always with Ruth, I find her a bit of a selfish character to start off with. I can imagine myself in her position and having that fight over my husband and baby. Then the twist, wow. What a bonus to be able to listen to it whenever I want.

Inaccurate

I think it’s very irresponsible not investigating the effects and uses of a medication if you name it, to make out that antidepressants make a person appear drunk is absolute tosh, and for people in recovery from addiction it gives an inaccurate message. The narrator was good, the story weak, it was like living a day to day life, not a thrilling one at that. Also inaccurate capabilities of a newish born baby. Small details can help a weak story become stronger, this one had the opposite. Shame I loved PG’s details in historical books.
