About this listen

A love story about opening your heart, by Rainbow Rowell, the New York Times bestselling author of Eleanor & Park.

Cath and Wren are identical twins, and until recently they did absolutely everything together. Now they're off to university and Wren's decided she doesn't want to be one half of a pair any more – she wants to dance, meet boys, go to parties and let loose. It's not so easy for Cath. She's horribly shy and has always buried herself in the fan fiction she writes, where she always knows exactly what to say and can write a romance far more intense than anything she's experienced in real life.

Without Wren, Cath is completely on her own and totally outside her comfort zone. She's got a surly room-mate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can't stop worrying about her dad, who's loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

Now Cath has to decide whether she's ready to open her heart to new people and new experiences, and she's realizing that there's more to learn about love than she ever thought possible . . .

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell comes with special bonus material; the first chapter from Rainbow's irresistible novel Carry On.

I listened twice

This story is wonderful escapism, with all the layers of fiction, fan fiction and the story of Cath's days at college. I finished it, had the usual few days of music gap, then started it again. I didn't have any new titles I wanted to hear as much as I wanted to hear this again. It's not challenging, it's a comforting listen and I love it.

different

I'm not sure what to say about this book, I both liked and disliked it
when I first started listening I had to pick my phone back up to check I hadn't clicked on the wrong thing as it was confusing at first, once I got used to the layout of the book it was ok but I don't really think the excerpts from the book she writes fan fiction for really added that much, I found it got quite irritating later on.
the story itself is mostly a standard YA coming of age while dealing with life's struggles, it's well written and I enjoyed the story but i don't think I'd call it memorable

All I can say....

All I can say is 'Wow'. How can something be so amazing? The performance captured the characters perfectly and the story itself is amazing.
I keep getting lost in it when on my way to college.
Just sitting in my bus seat, eyes closed and bag held tight I my chest, volume on full power: I can see the characters playing around in front of me.
Indeed some weird looks from all the heartfelt moments and sometimes even the tears this has bought to me.
If anyone wants to get lost in a book or even wants to be found in a way, this is for you....

Emotional and addictive

Initially it feels like the usual coming of age story but it’s an emotional road to get there. A thoughtful story where you feel for all the characters. My only complaints were the Simon Snow interruptions, which I know are actually important to the story, I just found them to break the flow. I also felt the transition of Cathe from non tounchy to touchy felt like an immediate switch rather than a build-up. I liked the closing of the story with Nick, he was a d**k.
