Summary

Meet Tony Hill's most twisted adversary - a killer with a shopping list of victims, driven by the most perverted of desires. The murder and mutilation of teenager Jennifer Maidment is horrific enough on its own. But it's not long before Tony realises it's just the start of a brutal and ruthless campaign that's targeting an apparently unconnected group of young people. Tony battles to find the answers that will give him personal and professional satisfaction in his most testing investigation yet.

The most annoying narration I have heard

I nearly returned this book because the narration was so incredibly plodding. Every word was picked out in a jarring staccato akin to a toddler learning to read. And the accents were even worse; never in my life have I heard such a bad Liverpudlian accent!!

Having said all of that, the only reason that I endured the narration was because the storyline showed promise. Having got to the end, I'm quite pleased that I did. I will listen to the next in the series as long as it has a different narrator...

Very poor writing - lots of bad language

I found the actual story OK, but realised that my interest was waning when I started to look to see how much more of the story I still had to listen to - only to see I was less than a third of the way through.

I usually love Saul Reichlin's narrations, but in this story he sounded very stilted and very slow - as if talking to a three year old, articulating his words very purposefully.

I was unimpressed by the CONSTANT reminders that various characters were lesbian - how this added to the tale I do not know - frankly I don't care about anyone's sexual preferences - I cannot think it makes any difference to the way that they carry out their work. I just find it unnecessarily intrusive!

This book reminded me why I stopped reading books by Val McDermid

So frustrating

This book was a real struggle for me, and has well and truly put me off buying any more in the series. Tony has turned into a whinge-y sap, and Carol, a completely unlikeable drunk who hates Tony for reasons that make NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

Awesome series

I love Val McDermid, especially the Tony Hill / Carol Jordan series.
Many of the reviews I’ve seen complain about the narrator, he is a ropey in the first book but gets better - and you’ll be so engrossed in the story you won’t care.

Terrible narration

As expected terrific story but narration totally spoiled it for me. Very amateurish attempts at characterisation failed miserably and every character sounded 65++ which created altered images to the perceived reality in my head.
Love this author but would not purchase another with this narrator

Really enjoyed the storylines & narration. The characters are well developed & the twist in the tail was good too

Not too impressed

wasn't as thought provoking or jaw dropping as other ones by Val macdurmid. I've read several disparaging comments about the narrator. I found that he was good . I liked the way he portrayed the authors protagonist and subsequent characters. Thanks to all involved in the making of this audiobook.

narrator ruined the listen

Enjoyed the book immensely but ruined by a stilted narrator. Accents terrible and Stacey in previous books had a London accent and now a bad Chinese impression
