Summary

From a childhood spent making smoke bombs, killing wasps and carving soap in '70s Kent, Harry Hill then found himself in charge of hundreds of sick people as a junior doctor. Out of his depth and terrified, he chucked it all in to pursue his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Battling his way through the '90s comedy circuit, he quickly rose to become a household name and one of the UK's most celebrated comics, almost making it to the top of the showbiz tree....

From being chased around a car park by an angry heckler, getting fired from Capital Radio and watching every episode of Freaky Eaters, to a bizarre assassination attempt and cutting up Simon Cowell's trousers, Harry takes an honest and hilarious look at the ups and downs of his life and career through the lens of what didn't go right.

He shares his secrets on how to be a great comedian, finding joy in failure and creativity in struggle, whilst never forgetting that life is short....

"A brilliant insight in to what it takes to go from regular funny bloke to one of the best stand ups I've ever seen." (Lee Mack)

"Proper laugh-out-loud funny, fascinating, and doubles up as probably the best book of advice on how to be a comedian I've ever read. A must for anyone who's interested in the business of laughter." (Joe Lycett)

Very enjoyable listen.

I'm a big fan of Harry Hill. He does however, refer several times to himself as being the nations favourite..... Sounds a little conceited of him. It didn't put me off. He's an intelligent man and at times hilariously funny. Most of all, he's clearly a nice guy and this book is an enjoyable listen. I thoroughly recommend it. I do wish he'd bring back TV Burp.... ITV.. Take note.

Had to fight to finish

Should have been so much better. Harry is a funny guy on TV, his humour is often visual which may explain why I didn't find this that funny. Don't read if you have a history of heart disease, It didn't fill me with any confidence in the medical profession, although from my very limited experience, most doctors I have come across have been wonderful. This does not compare to Billy Connelly's book but I would miss him if he was not on our screens.

Local news roundup!

Absolutely loved this autobiography by Harry Hill. A rare insight into his life and how his mind works. It charts the ups and downs of his career in a very entertaining way. Harry read his book very nicely.

Uplifting and Full of Silliness!

Loved this book and it was extra-good to have it read by Harry. It was so interesting to hear about his life, how he came to be a comedian and of course the unique Hill take on everything. Harry is one of very few people who can make me laugh into a state of speechlessness and this audiobook prompted much laughing out loud. It was especially welcome while I was getting through an illness in the latter chapters. I laughed so much that my fiancé has bought us tickets for Harry’s upcoming tour!

Funny Read

I really enjoyed listening to Harry Hill's story read by Matthew Hall. It gives good insight into the performer's need for applause, it's an addiction. (Even Cynthia Erivo describes the feeling in a YouTube interview about I Can't Sing). it's a pity the musical wasn't recorded, I think I'd have watched it with glee from the comfort of my sofa.
The slog through the comedy circuit is a tough one but the burning desire to perform is real.
Harry's style is madcap and surreal and should still be out there; it's niche but would have its own cult following, he thinks out of the box and occasionally off the planet. He makes me laugh and this made several of my most recent walks fly by.

An Unexpected Gem

It’s been a while since I’d watched a Harry Hill stand up or TV show, and I was hesitant to spend the credit to listen to the full autobiography; however very quickly I realised this was a great decision to purchase.

Whether you’re a budding comedian wanting some insider tips from an industry great, or you’re just a bit of a nosey b*****d and want to know more about the man behind the large collar…it’s a great listen from the man himself.

Thanks to H, and all involved with putting this together. Now time to rewatch some of those great stand up shows of his :)
