Dr James Greenwood
About this listen
Growing up in Yorkshire and with farming blood in his genes, James Greenwood always knew he would end up as a vet.
Animals have been part of James' life for as long as he can remember, from pulling lambs on a hilltop farm as a child and having stick insects crawling out of his school uniform in class, to renting a flat behind a zoo in Jersey and finding himself treating a newborn baby elephant as a newly qualified vet. Written with his trademark warmth and humour, James offers a fascinating insight into the world of veterinary medicine with tales of treating cats and dogs, horses, pigs and cows, as well as delving deep into his relationship with his beloved and much-missed, one-eyed Labrador, Oliver.
However, the path to realising his childhood ambition has not always been easy and at times he has questioned whether it truly is the best job in the world. Through all of the challenging lows and extraordinary highs, it has been the animals themselves that have spurred James on to want to continue vetting and helping him find his calling as a GP vet.
Warm, poignant and full of heart, James' story is both a beautiful tribute to the role animals play in our lives and a rare glimpse into what it's really like to be a vet, and is perfect for fans of Matt Baker, The Yorkshire Shepherdess and The Supervet.

So insightful into the life of a vet
I wasn’t expecting this to be such an emotional rollercoaster of a listen. It brought on such a range of emotions as you listen to James tell his stories of life as a vet. It really makes you respect the vet profession and all they have to deal with but is also a wonderfully told story of James’ life caring for and loving animals. A brilliant listen.

Fantastic listen!
Everything from start to finish was incredible to listen to. To hear true, real and raw emotions from vet school right through to being a vet was a joy to listen to. So many emotions were felt when listening to James’ book - happiness, empathy, funny and intriguing! I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a book you can listen to and really feel like you’re there with the author.

Brilliant
From beginning to end I was totally engaged with the book. Such passion and care shone throughout of James’s connections with animals and also gave such insight to veterinary medicine and the huge responsibilities they face every single day in their dedication to care and welfare of animals. Even more special, James recorded for Audible and it made it even more personal of his life.

A super insite into a genuine relatable vet.
I'm not one for listening to books and my goodness it captured me!
It pulled my heart strings, made me laugh and put tears in my eyes.
Extremely well written, I felt I was standing right by James's side watching every adventure unfold.
Can't wait for the second book.

All of life's emotions in one fabulous read!
What an enjoyable read!
Learning about James life and how he became a vet and man is a true privilege. I have been lucky enough to meet Oliver and I can say from the heart he was a beautiful dog, his doggy dads loved him so much.
Happy to have read this and understand James more.

Emotional rollercoaster - loved this book!
Totally addicted to this book.., you feel like you’re there, living every different scenario, from the childhood antics to panicking about grades at Uni and in every scene with the variety of patients and their individual stories. James G lets you into his life and takes you with him. Tears flowed over Barney and I was ready to get a gun to shoot whoever hurt Rudy the horse and the little farm dog. James G is the sort of person I need in my life - what a lovely man with a lovely family, and I adore that he has called his son Oliver to celebrate his first born lab! 🥰
