Summary

Bravery. Honor. Sacrifice. These are more than mere words to trained Marine sniper Nathan McBride. He’s never backed away from danger, and he’s not about to start now, even if it means confronting the cold-blooded interrogator who tortured him to the brink of death more than a decade ago.

When a mutilated body is discovered in a remote Utah lake, it ignites a chain of events that forces Nathan to face a dark chapter from a past he’s worked hard to forget. Could his Nicaraguan enemy be active again? On American soil? The evidence is clear, but the stakes are higher than Nathan can know. In a showdown that will test Nathan’s understanding of justice and mercy, he’ll have to make a life or death decision that has the potential to expose and destroy people at the highest levels of government.

Critic reviews

"An absolutely bone-chilling thriller. Equal parts Stephen Hunter and Thomas Harris. Imagine Bob Lee Swagger going after Hannibal Lecter and you will have only scratched the surface of this intensely exciting novel. Forced To Kill will haunt you long after you read its last brilliantly plotted page." (Brad Thor)

Nathan McBride v Jack Reacher

Where does Forced to Kill rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Nathan McBride is a tough cookie and this book is well worth a read. My preference is for Reacher but McBride runs a close second.

Average at best

Standardised storyline, hero gets revenge on villain, the reader does his best with what he was given -

Worth a listen

Would you consider the audio edition of Forced to Kill to be better than the print version?

First book was great from the start, I found this a little slow going for the first 20mins or so. Picks up after that - definitely worth a listen. Looking forward to the next one.

Good listen

Good story on the whole. Little slowly read I felt so I speeded it up but the story kept me interested.

Predictable with a capital P

Well written and well performed, but the story was too predictable. Some people may like this kind of thing, but, alas, it’s not for me.

a mediocre follow up

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, this one was not as exciting but did develop the characters depth more, I will probably listen to the 3rd one in between some other serious novels as a bit of light relief

Okay story, but poor narration

The storyline is okay, but the dialogue at times feels like it has come from a high school essay. The narration is breathy with exaggerated emphasis on the wrong words and in the wrong places. The book has greater potential than is realized in this recording with this narrator.

An excellent 2nd chapter to the McBride story

What made the experience of listening to Forced to Kill the most enjoyable?

Twists, turns, the emotional input from his girlfriend which creates his torn reactions.

Who was your favorite character and why?

McBribe obviously and then Harvey Fontana - this applies to the series not just this book.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Dick Hill is a legend. I would actually consider employing him to sit in the corner and read to me! I stumbled over the McBride series after looking for other books that Dick Hill had narrated after Jack Reacher.

The tone of reading allows you to focus on the story details and forget that you're actually being read to. A lot of other narraters make sure a hoo-ha over character impressions, it puts you off the content. Over reading the book, Dick allows you to shut off from the wider world (especially on a packed commuter train) and enjoy just the story.

Any additional comments?

An excellent audiobook and great part of the series.
